Plex Media Server quality settings

Hi All,

Got my plex up and running for a few weeks and have also installed PlexPy on my NAS for a greater look into plex and what is doing / streaming.

All my movies are 1080p x264 mkvs and I have my remote quality set to 4Mbps 720p as I have a 20Mbps upload which can more than handle the 4Mbps.

How ever for some reason it looks like Plex is transcoding into 480p despite the device also being set to 4Mbps 720p, here are some details for an example from PlexPy. Any suggestions as to why it’s going right down to 480p?

First thing to check… Quality and bitrate the client is asking for governs what PMS will do (up to the limits you set in the server)

    Resolution: 480pp
    Width: 1278
    Height: 538

I consider the number ‘480p’ a cosmetic issue.

When you look at the pixel dimensions, it clearly shows that this is not a 480p video, but a 720p one - just like you told it in the quality setting.

480p video cannot exceed the width of 720 px and the height of 480 px,
while a 720p picture is defined by a bounding box of 1280 px width and 720 px height.
The picture only fits into the latter.

I agree with Otto on this… It is a 720p video.

Let’s break out the hard facts, shall we?

How about the XML ?

Thanks very much I thought it was strange and even the quality was nothing like 480p. I’ll leave everything as is.
