Raid 1 performance?

So I have a real quick question I would like to ask. I am looking to build a media server that is capable of playing 1080p and pushing it 10 devices, either on or off the network. My question is whether or not I will have issues streaming using a raid 1 setup at max load. Redundancy will be very important since I will not want to rip all of my media again since that was a task that took almost forever. Any information on this would be wonderful. Thanks in advance!

RAID1 will actually increase read performance, since you will be able to read the same information from two discs at the same time.

RAID is not backup.

But wouldn’t RAID 1 provide the redundancy neccisary to make sure that I have the lowest possibility to keep data if a drive fails. I’m trying to get the best bang for my buck here, and if I don’t have to order an extra 50% in RED drives, then I really do not want to have to do that.

‘Mirroring’ will only cover hardware failure of one single drive.
Not failure of the controller or other hardware components.
Not data loss due to software or users errors or viruses.

For the use case at hand, I think you can cover more failure scenarios if you put that second drive into an external enclosure (or a wholly separate computer or NAS) and schedule regular backups from the main drive to it.
