Raid 10? I need to start backing up my media before its too late, what should I use?

As the title says, I am running my media server on its own dedicated computer and currently I am using 5 (yes 5) 4TB external drives. As it took me a very long time to load every movie and TV show I own, I really don’t want to have to re-do this when one of these externals fail.

Researching Raids I am either leaning towards Raid 5 or Raid 10 (Raid 1+0), I am not sure which is the best option to use for plex and was wondering what you all use (both your hardware and Raid number)

Much appreciated!

RAID isn’t a backup solution, it’s a data redundancy solution. If you want a backup solution, tape or cloud solutions are common ones. To a lesser extent, you can copy things to several hard drives and keep them offline and stored away, but make sure you use different lots - hard drives tend to fail about the same time for any drive manufactured at the same time, so spacing them out is crucial.

I am not looking for a ‘Backup’ solution per say, I am looking for something a little more stable than my current setup. My thought process was using raid 10 that way if and when a drive fails, I pop in a new one in the failed spot (or use the last drive as the hot safe, if i choose a 5 bay) and let it do its thing. HDD’s for me are a dime a dozen due to what I do for a living, so I am not worried about having to replace them. I am just trying to figure out the best data storage/ redundancy capable for that “Ahh ■■■■” moment.

But yes I do agree with what you are saying, and I should have a complete separate backup, which I will work on once I get my main storage solution solved.

I know there are a few threads about storage solutions. While you are waiting for responses, search around and see if you can find anything regarding RAID and RAID-type solutions.

Implement snapraid on the external drives.
