Raid 1 vs Raid 10 for SSD disks hosting my media library?

My main goals with using raid in my plex server is to have a backup of my data in case of failure of the hardware and to have a single logical drive for all of the data. At the same time I don’t want to gimp the performance of playback on the drive. So I was wondering if it is really worth Raid 10. Since I will be using SSDs (because of speed, lifespan, noise and thermals) I dont know if raid 0 features will really benefit me that much. Opinions?

No. Just use RAID 1 if you have to. But, in case of hardware failure, I would just have good backups to a second disk and skip raid altogether, if it were me. You should have backup anyway, RAID is not backup.

Raid is most definitely a backup. That’s kind of the point of RAID (well at least all raid except pure raid 0). Amazon uses RAID to have backup of customer data for that very reason. Alternative backups to 3TB of data are only useful if your house burns down or something. Sure it would be potentially useful but to be current it has to be in your machine anyway or you have to have more $ than I to afford 3 TB at an online backup site. I think Raid 1 should do it though.

Most definitely not. RAID is a “high-availability” technology, not a backup.

Absolutely not. It’s redundancy. Not a backup.

This is true. No form of raid or any like system (like StableBit’s DrivePool) is a backup,
A backup protects not only against hardware failure but also against accidental file deletion. If you delete a file from most any raid type of system it is gone and cannot be recovered.

My use case is DrivePool and I am VERY comfortable with its power and flexibility BUT I also keep external backups for anything I consider important.

BTW: Raid like systems are also not protection against catastrophic failures. If you are using Raid and you have a fire or other event that destroys the entire raid system you probably have more serious issues than loss of a bunch of video and audio files BUT if you have a good protected (offsite is best) backup there is one less worry in your worry basket.

If your backup cannot be offsite then it should be kept in a fire proof cabinet or safe.
