Random crashes since update to plexmediaserver_1.22.2.4282-a97b03fad_amd64.deb

Server Version#: plexmediaserver_1.22.2.4282-a97b03fad_amd64.deb
Player Version#: n/a

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been seeing hard crashes of the linux server on which I run Plex.

The server stops responding altogether and locks completely. A hard reboot is needed to re-enable the system.

The syslog and kernel logs look clean, however the plex log shows odd chars in the log at the time of the crash.

I expect this is related to some automated cron activity, since the crashes have occured at times no playback was ongoing.

I find it odd that the server was re-processing Music library metadata even though no changes have been made to that in a while.

Please find the attached sever log and let me know if anything there makes sense.

Thanks!

@ignaciob_tkf

Do you have more logs please?

It’s not possible to see what was happening.

What you show does happen when the kernel panics.

Speaking to Music reprocessing; I know it will continue to attempt matching any tracks which didn’t match. This behavior is different than movies & television.

Thanks for the reply chuck.

What logs would be helpful?

Please let me know and I’ll attach as needed.

Best

Not knowing how active your system is —

All 6 Plex Media Server logs is a good idea.

It lets me see:

  1. what it was doing before
  2. events immediately prior to and including failure
  3. recovery / activity which continued post restart

Here go the logs. Thanks.Plex Logs.zip (3.4 MB)

Thank you for that.

I’m tracking and trying to hunt down a problem which appears the same in the logs.

Your logs show:

Apr 25, 2021 04:13:41.519 [0x7fdbe7fff700] DEBUG - [JobRunner] Jobs: Starting child process with pid 20652
\00\00\00\00\00\00\00\00\00\00 <-- long string of nulls here

Would it be possible to obtain the Crash Report DUMP file (.dmp) ?

We do this by:

  1. Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced
  2. Turn off (UNCHECK) the Crash Reporting box.
  3. SAVE after making the change
  4. When it next crashes like this. please check:
/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Crash Reports/1.22.2.4282-a97b03fad/PLEX MEDIA SERVER for the dmp file

Please place that file in a ZIP and attach it here.

Thanks for the comment.

I’ve updated the config to look as follows (un-check Send crash reports to Plex)

Is that OK?

If that’s all I’ll attach the crash report as soon as there’s a new occurance.

Thanks!

That’s perfect.
Thanks!

Hi Chuck,

The server crashed last night at 4am but I see no Crash Logs. Let me attach the Media Server Logs as well as the Crash Reports folder for reference.

I’ve verified and the configuration change we did yesterday is still as we left it. Any ideas?

@ignaciob_tkf

One of the team members found the source of a number of these crashes.
Engineering did work on them.
We’re tracking down the status of them now.
(Might be a bit until we get a reply – Engineering 6-month meeting week)

OK, good to hear.

I did an apt-update and upgrade of the linux box and the server didn’t crash last night. I don’t expect it’s a proper fix, but for the time I can reset it daily until further notice.

I’ll look forward to any updates you can share to understand the source of the crashes and patch accordingly.

Best!
