Thank you.
Any reason why clicking the cover artwork plays them in a random order?
For example in Music app on Mac, double clicking the cover artwork does the same as what you described.
I wonder why that is? I mean, if I have a playlist that I ordered a certain way, I would expect it to be played in that order and if I want it to shuffle, then I can go inside and click the shuffle button.
I mean, I can get used to it, but it seems to be like a random (no pun intended) feature.
Playlists in certain cases are more flexible. For example I have a lot of different singles (either my own music or music from other artists) and I create a playlist for that, because when it comes to those songs, they will be separated by album so if I have 30 singles, I will have 30 albums. With a playlist I can just add them all in the order I want them to play.
I’m still new to Plex/Plexamp so using albums is still not very intuitive for me. Going back and forth between playlists and albums, doesn’t seem very “productive” to me.
I’m loving the app though. I just have to find a good workflow that works for me and get used to all these “different” features, compared to other apps I use/used
IIRC, it was done to speed up operation for the most common use cases.
I concede that it should probably be indicated in the user interface that clicking on that button is actually shuffling the list.
Thank you for detailing!
I think it is good to understand the different use cases in detail, in order to make good decisions about the user interface and the various workflows.
Still, personally, I find that playing the music always in the same order can get boring. A good playlist generator can shake things up and present you your music in new, and sometimes pleasantly surprising, combinations.
(However, that part of the Plex experience is largely only available with a Plex pass.)
I believe that an app shouldn’t be built based on a personal/subjective perspective of something being “boring” or not when a button has a specific meaning across multiple devices/apps. The play button has been associated with “play whatever is inside, in order” and an app should follow that familiar workflow to make it familiar to the user instead of confusing them.
Now, if the feature is something people often do (shuffle songs inside a playlist) then I believe that should then be an extra feature that the user decides to activate, but shouldn’t be the default behavior, imo.
For example if you add 2 songs from the same artist together that were recorded in a way that need to go one after another (a live show, for example, where the songs are connected, but it’s not limited to live songs; I have at least 2 albums where a persons speech at the end of a song continues to the next song), then shuffling them by default will break that link between the songs.
So yeah, I think this should be a toggling feature and shouldn’t be on by default.
Again, I understand how it works, so this is just my opinion and suggestion to, hopefully, make the app a little better and less “confusing” to new users.
