Raspberry 4

I just saw that Raspberry foundation released the next generation Raspberry 4. Is seems like quite a performance increase compared to 3b+. Is this the perfect Plex Media server computer?

I saw this announcement myself. Dual 4K video and up to 4GB of RAM for $55.

Based on the specs I’m seeing so far, it almost certainly will be. Unfortunately, I just saw the announcement this morning, and it’s already sold out. I never back-order or pre-order, so I’ll be waiting a few months to find out. Anyone testing the current Plex build on Raspbian Buster?

Keep in mind the Rpi4 have HW acceleration to DECODE 4K/H265 streams, not to encode quickly this kind of video. I think it’s more useful as a Plex player (in Direct Play / Direct Stream mode).

i think plex pretty much always encodes everything to h264 when transcoding (what would be the point in encoding back to h265? :slightly_smiling_face:).

the pi4 has HW accelerated h264 encoding, but so did the pi3. plex doesn’t support hardware transcoding apart from nvidia and intel quicksync. i don’t know why, since i thought these encoders used generic libraries (openmax?), but maybe it’s not that simple…

So just to be clear… Would Plex Media Server on a pi4 be able to play x265? And given I have the bandwidth needed, would the pi4 be able to stream it in x265 to an external location?

I’ve very curious on how the RP4 could be utilized as a server also. I currently have an old 2011 Mac mini as my server, but it would be amazing if I could replace it with a RP4. I mostly have Blu-ray rips (remuxed) into mkv, and direct play to Apple TV 4Ks on the televisions. I have a gigabit ethernet network, so I think this should work according to the specs. My current setup can’t do 4K at all, but 1080p seems fine for my family.

I would like to know this as well. I ordered one to play around with PleX and Emby on it. I already read that Emby will implement the hw transcoding for the rpi4, but I would love for plex to support it as well.

Are the Plex builds for Buster available yet? If I head to https://dev2day.de/pms/dists/ I don’t see Buster.

yes, +1

Would it be possible to provide a buster build for Plex in the meantime? Or maybe instructions for power users to build the Plex server from source (or anything close to it)?

The RPi4 has been announced 3 weeks ago, many users can’t wait to test Plex on a more powerful box. Give us a build or a package that can run on buster, then we’ll figure out how to fine tune it

hello, any update on this ?

I guess no update ?

Set up a PMS on a Pi4 (4G) a few days ago.
First time with a PMS, so I cannot compare to other systems.
Installation was a breeze (note: a Google search too me to many sites giving instructions using Dev2Day, but that is outdated, only need to d/l the Debian ARMv7 package from plex.tv , copy to you Pi home directory and install (this site gives full instructions).

Using now only to Direct Play/Stream to my Roku Plex App and works great!
