Raspberry Pi

I saw you in chat, I'm not always in there (usually during business hours I will respond). Leave me a message with /msg void_ptr, or just shout it out into chat.

If you want to be added to the trello board make an account (free) and send me your info.

Yeah IRC is somehting i am used to

I Have created a trello account, but i didńt figure out how it woked

To be honnest i bought today a new sdhc card in the idea of installing the plex versiona and test it, and be able to keep a running version of xbmc on another one so that kids and wife can still use the pi, and until the plex version can replace it

I am not so familiar with linux, so i guess i wońt be very helpfull on the coding side. Though I can still spend some time with beta testing.

I will probably try to setup my sd card tomorrow and give it a try

Feel free to add me to whatever can be useful to this

… And keep up the good work !

Well I have tried to follow the tester topic and make a new install for plex testing.

Installing ubuntu cd went ok.

Then i followed the link to install gentoo on the sd card and it booted ok. Though i got an error when untaring dale stage3 archive. I cannot paste it here but it says that there is something wrong with /boot/.keep, cannot change uuid 0 or something ( sorry i wasnt able to retrieve the error message).

The pi booted the linux, and the i started the first ssh script which run ok until emerge -avg tmux.

At this stage it doesnt seem to install, i have left some log on the irc channel.

The next line running tmux will say that tmux is an unknown command, so something doesnt install properly …

My bad, I didn't make a Tmux binary... just skip that step for now.

Great idea!

Just burn an ubuntu bootable cd its easir and doesnt require the virtualbox installation :)

Thanks for all the hard work on this.

Just to be clear, video playback isn’t working yet, right?

Also, Dale, would you be interested in, either adding PVR support in your RasPi build, or making a PVR branch (PlexPVR) of your build, at some point?

See this thread for the details (basically I’ve enabled Addons and PVR to the latest PHT release, we would also need to build the PVR addons for the Pi of course):

http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/57893-live-tv-pvr-in-plex-home-theater

I will definitely add support for this eventually.

Video playback isn't working in THIS BUILD, but is working in my playback test using pyplex. Video playback will be added once the gui is properly optimized to browse to playback to start.

I’ve got gentoo installed successfully, however when I’ve tried to install git it’s trying to build from source rather than download the binaries using the command you’ve suggested…

emerge -avG git # it’ll complain about the overlay, that’s ok. Make sure that it is selecting BINARY packages (should show up in purple instead of green)

I’ve had a look at emerge -help but can’t see anything that would suggest I can force it to download binaries over source. Is anyone able to point me in the right direction?

If not I’ll leave it building while I’m at work tomorrow ready for when I get in.

Thanks!

I think i had the same kind of issue. It just started to build it all (ffmpeg etc).

i just decided to leave it build

The last emerge with plexht will take quite a while with the build, something like 3-4 hours

Perhaps it would be an idea for one of us to upload an image somewhere? (assuming there's no legal reason we shouldn't be and dale's happy with it?)

That would be a great idea!

Yeah brebuilt binaries would be nice

That would be great!! How big would they be, approx?

There already are prebuilt binaries, that's what that PORTDIR_OVERLAY is.

I'm making a dd image right now though, that'll be MUCH easier for people to install.

Sorry, I guess I forgot to make a binary for git too xD

Sit tight, i'll upload the dd image tonight if it works.

-Dale

Hey folks,

My instructions from before a bit more advanced and there were a few errors in them (that would be crippling for people that don’t have linux/gentoo experience).

SO, i spent the day making a DD image for people to use (actually, making a cool script that’ll let me easily build DD images  - it’s a pretty cool script, i’ll be posting it to my github

You can see how to use it at http://blog.srvthe.net/archives/474

It is much easier to use, and allows you to flash the SD from ANY os, not just linux.

Let me know how it works out!

-Dale

I'm going to check this out later today!

Good Job dale !

Just tried it and this time the installation works without any problem !

yes it’s laggy and missed a bunch of artwork we are used to see, but that looks very promessing and with the SD image principle you should get a bunch of people into testing it ! :stuck_out_tongue:

On my plex setup (nas running the server), it just worked perfectly when started and found the server without any configuration.

I got two issues tho after install :

useradd -G wheel -a plexuser will not recognize the -a option

then when rebooting and logging it will say that there is no directory, logging with HOME=/

Then, when I run plexht, it will say that there are premissions error in ~/.xbmc. So I had to run it from root account

Other than that I can browse music, movies on my existing library and it will browse slowly about everything i have tried.

I know that the player has not been ported yet, but trying to play anything will lead to various results

  • Black screen for music. You cannot get out of this black screen without rebooting the pi, at least i didn’t figure out how (backspace on keyboard wont go back)
  • Black Screen with synopsis for video. but you can get out with Space to pause, and backspace to get out
  • Series. got something wierd. When entering for instance Dexter serie, after a couple seconds staying on the menus, got black screen. Might be linked to the serie music theme playing in the background without the player not sure, but makes the series hard to test

Also, some preference options seems to have a wierd layout like in preferences / videos , the option for “Adjust Display refresh rate to match video”, it’s set to Off, but I can only see “Of”, whereas the option below is set to Off as well and i can see it

All right that is a first shot of things i have seen

Awesome work dale !, and thanks for all the tile you have spent on this !

Great Job Guys! I just joined the forum after a few weeks of following your work the raspberry pi client. I have a question? Will the client look like windows of something not so flattering such as a roku? I haven’t bought my pi yet so I was wondering how it will look. Debating on building a windows htpc for plex or waiting?

Thanks

Well as of now, The pi client is quite lightenned due to lack of optimization, so it doesn’t look as nice as the official PHT.

This is the first build though so there are plenty of things to do yet.

I cannot be sure of what the plex client will be, but for having tried the XBMC client of the PI, it works really nicely.

They have also been through the performance issue and they solved it, so plex port should also be optimized.

Knowing that now Plex and XBMC share a lot of the code, I would tend to think that plex client on pi should be performing nicely as well.

I have a powerfull nas, I have a late 2010 mac mini tu run plex at home, but given that pi can be found around $30, it really is worth your money.

I have a Dune HDI player and have seen some popcorns at friends, and i must admit that for what is about playing movies, the pi has a much better feature/money ratio.

Added to this, the fact that it is very energy efficient and that its lightweight OS give him a very good stability.

Well, i’ll probably use a couple PIs on secondary TVs in the house because that is the best compromise i have found yet
