Is Raspberry Pi a viable platform for Plex Server?
My Library is currently on an external USB3 HD, the meta data is on local hard disk on windows headless but could be moved to the external disk.
Can “Discover” nonsense be disabled or not implemented on Rasperry Pi?
The “Discover” “nonsense” is client-based, not server based. The features showed up without anybody’s servers needing to be updated. The server just receives the calls from clients on what to stream, but it doesn’t typically serve up its own UI unless asked for specifically (by accessing its IP address in a browser). So changing over to a Pi-based server would not change anything about this “Discover” feature.
(Note, I am ambivalent about this “Discover” feature. I don’t see anything malicious about it, and can mostly ignore it already, though I may check on it from time to time to refresh my wishlist items from major streaming services. All they need to do is add in options to opt out of this feature entirely, and I think all complaints will go away)
As for Pi being viable platform itself… It depends. I’d like to know myself whether it is capable of transcoding AT ALL. I think in what little research I’ve done (none) I heard it isn’t capable at transcoding, but if you direct-stream to all clients that will never happen. I want to set up a jellyfin Pi-server for a friend, and knowing how good the Pi is at transcoding in Plex may change my decision on using the Pi for that.
I don’t know about Discover as I’ve never touched it, but I used a Pi 4 to stream live TV from an HD Homerun and it has no problem streaming 4 live HD channels at once, during the Plex Pass trial it also had no issue recording and playing back TV. Providing you are not transcoding the Pi is more than capable for your needs.
