raspberrypi 2

I'm a little gutted as I bought a B+ a couple of weeks back for a second Rasplex device.  Had the supplier told me to hold fire for two weeks.....

SoC : Broadcom® BCM2836 (CPU, GPU, DSP, SDRAM, and single USB port)

CPU: 900 MHz quad-core ARM Cortex A7 (ARMv7 instruction set)
GPU: Broadcom VideoCore IV @ 250 MHz, OpenGL ES 2.0 (24 GFLOPS), 1080p30 MPEG-2 and VC-1 decoder (with license), 1080p30 h.264/MPEG-4 AVC high-profile decoder and encoder
Memory: 1 GB (shared with GPU)

You will be glad to know that one of the suppliers ordered in a batch of chips completely forgetting the Pi 2 was being launched. Good luck to them trying to shift those lol

The RPi 2 with Windows won't be able to run any x86 programs. It will probably be for tinkerers only.

The only point of Windows is the application ecosystem, so Windows on the RPi will probably be as useful as a Windows RT tablet (meaning not very).

Well if this free version of Windows runs Windows Store Apps then it could potentially run the Plex W8.1 app too. Which gives you a wide-ish selection of codec support and even Sync support. So you could have a very portable pi2 with a 64gb microsd with lots of synced media on there. But I'm not sure if the W8.1 Plex app is great with IR remote control.

There is a very compelling case for Rasplex even if you could run PHT on a Pi2 running Windows; Rasplex is optimised for the pi and runs like an appliance with no messing around and amazing stability. I can have Rasplex booted for many weeks at a time without ever having the need to reboot (and without any crashes); this kind of stability and utility with just better navigation performance in such a small package would be quite an experience.

Even more interesting is if it can run Store Apps then perhaps it can be a PLEX/Netflix/Hulu/Chrome box instead of a dedicated Plex box.  No more need for special channels in Plex.  Create a Windows Universal App that runs on Windows Phone, Tablet, Laptop, Desktop, Raspberry PI 2.

That's what excites me, [member='keithskaggs']. I'm considering an Xbox One for my living room because it is an all-in-one device. With one device, I can play Bluray discs, Plex, Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, WatchESPN, and Hulu Plus.

A Pi that could run all those apps (minus the Bluray discs, of course) would be perfect for other rooms. Roku can do this currently, but I HATE the Plex interface on Roku. A Pi would bring the full PHT experience.

Raspberry Pi 2. + PHT + HDMI-CEC = the cheapest way to get Plex built in your telly?

waiting on the verdict from here whether to proceed with purchase.

i'll be chucking the NUC out the window if its any good!

I ordered a Pi2. Even if it is just a tad faster in menu response than the B, it’s already money well spent!

You need to read the release notes correctly, you will not get the full Windows 10 desktop, just core components. You will have to write apps in C, visual Studio, etc, specifically for 'Windows 10 for IoT'. Loading any existing Windows Plex HT client will be impossible.

You'll only get this at the moment by going the Rasplex route, testing starting tomorrow.

Yes, but keep in mind that Microsoft's goal with windows is "Universal Apps" with Windows on all devices.  This is quite a step creating Windows 10 for a non x86 device.  Currently, Windows Phones are not x86 devices, yet Microsoft pushes the Universal App concept and has tools/Dev pages devoted to the concept.  If they are indeed bringing a version of Windows 10 to the PI, why not bring it into the Universal App family?  Perhaps the Windows 10 for PI is a chopped up version of the soon to be released Windows 10 for phones (Windows Phone Store currently has Plex, Netflix, and Hulu Plus).

Personally, I'd be interested in the Windows 10 Pi only if it was the full PHT experience. Otherwise I'd take Rasplex.

Maybe Keith, but according to my sources it will be at least a couple of months before even a beta is available, but here's hoping!

Any idea if this model will be capable of outputting native 1080p24? I think I read that the GPU is the same, so probably nothing changed in that regard?

Wow I CANNOT WAIT!

Just last week I was playing with Rasplex, and I loved the UI, but I didn't love the performance, even after overclocking. A huge CPU bump and double the RAM should do the trick!

I just ordered 2! to replace the 2 Pi Model B's I already had, I just want rasplex on them like ive got at the moment, i like that i can just switch over and its like another channel without having to switch it on or use a different remote etc... I'll have a go at installing rasplex straight on it as soon as they come! Woop Woop!!

I find it odd that people focus on the Windows 10 approach to getting wider application support, when a much more obvious route for an ARM device would be to adapt and recompile an Android image. Android 4.x is already implemented on similar tiny computer boxes with ARM processors, such as the Banana Pi which runs ‘Plex for Android’ fairly well even with just two cores. A quad-core processor should do it even better. I’ve used lots of Android apps both with the dual-core Banana Pi and with the quad-core OUYA console, which is also a similar tiny ARM-based computer unit.

That said, I still believe that a dedicated media player implementation like RasPlex under OpenELEC will produce better results.
And with a quad-core processor in the RPi 2 those results should be quite similar to what we get on a full-scale PC.

Are there any images for Android TV? I think it would be awesome to have an Android TV box for $35

Should rasplex just work or will some modifications to the software need to occur for it to run on raspberrypi 2?

Wondering the same, ordered one, should arive tomorrow.. just to install or is a new image build for this cpu required? Like the other ones here i think the new cpu and double ram should do the trick to speed up the gui!
