raspberrypi 2

Are there any images for Android TV? I think it would be awesome to have an Android TV box for $35

No, and according to raspberrypi.org there won't be any from them, the Android marketplace is too fragmented. Microsoft, however, is changing direction with Windows 10, but as far as the Raspberry Pi is concerned it will only be core components that will run pre compiled apps (i.e. built on another PC), maybe Plex Inc may take this route, maybe not. Whilst I will not be installing 'Windows 10 for IoT' on any Pi (haven't used any Windows products since Windows 3.11), it does broaden the scope for educational uses, which is the primary reason the Pi exists at all.

Just to answer any more questions like this.

Dale recently stated:

"I'm concerned that it might take a while to get it working though, as the XBMC codebase we use is quite old, and the Helix merge is still in progress. We're also using a very old OpenELEC codebase, because of compatibility reasons with newer versions with Frodo. Then again, it may be as easy as just changing some compile flags and dropping the new drivers in, which would be a few days work. It's hard to say how hard this is. Nevertheless, we won't stop until it's done."

Whilst dropping in new drivers and firmware might mean that Rasplex will run on the new model, it doesn't necessarily mean that the power of the new chip and additional memory will be utilised, further work is needed to ensure that a future version of Rasplex fully takes advantage of what's available. In the words of Plex Inc, it will be ready when it's ready!

Good info i will hold off on upgrading until it is out, I have been waiting for rasplex support on Cubox-i but this is much better and cheaper.

Does OpenELEC take fully advantage of the power of Pi 2 with their new build?

You need to read the release notes correctly, you will not get the full Windows 10 desktop, just core components. You will have to write apps in C, visual Studio, etc, specifically for 'Windows 10 for IoT'. Loading any existing Windows Plex HT client will be impossible.

Interesting article at ZDNET http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsofts-windows-10-for-iot-what-to-expect/

Specifically references Universal Apps and the possibility of them on IOT

Just tried 0.5.0 on my new shiny Raspberry Pi 2 and it fails to boot :-(

Darn, dunno whats needed? Red a post above that adding drivers etc. to get the new unit boot doesnt mean the extra power from cpu, memory can be used. That will need some work done and noone knows when that will be. I wonder if they new build of OpenELEC is optimized for the pi2 and can gain advantage of the new features or if it is a version just to get it to boot like the rasplex version thats being worked on?

True, needs more work.

The new OpenELEC version has only been patched to get it to boot, no word on whether it utilises the new hardware, but I doubt it..

No need to rush to get the latest 'tech'.  Watch this space.

I've also tried 0.5.0 and it gets past the firmware bit (Green light goes out) but then gets stuck at the multicoloured screen and doesn't boot any further.

as i wrote on page 1

Remember you’ll need an updated NOOBS or Raspbian image including an ARMv7 kernel and modules

that meens you need a new kernel and modules (drivers)

Well, is there any estimated time when we will have a support image of rasplex?

Been trying out my pi2 with OpenELEC and it's a really nice experience. My only real interest in Kodi is for live TV playback connecting to NextPVR (freesat) and it does a really nice job of that.

As some are known to say, the interface is incredible snappy with the pi2..

Is it more rapid in menus etc? Not so laggy than the B+?

OpenElec on Pi2 is flawless, beautifully smooth menus / interface. Navigating during playback is fantastic. Will 100% definitely be my go to player when Plex is working on it.

I agree!! I just received my Pi 2 about 30 minutes ago and the openELEC 5.0.1 for Pi-2 experience is amazing. Navigation is very snappy and stopping and starting full HD movies etc is much faster than my Pi B+.

I run a Plex household so I can't wait to get some RasPlex goodness on my Pi 2   :)

I wonder if the answer to this and similar questions can be known just yet, with p^2 just out.

Its 100% taking advantage of more power wether its full advantage I am not sure, but its night and day vs previous Pi

I concur with systemx.

Here are the results of my tests (YMMV).

Setup:

I used openELEC 5.0.1 on a SanDisk Ultra 8GB SD Card with wired ethernet connection and HDMI to display.

These were both using freshly downloaded openELEC img files.

I ran through the setup and added a movie collection of 129 movies and let them finish scanning first. I then pulled the power and ran each test.

The timings listed are from a Cold Boot to the KODI Main Menu.

Pi B+: openELEC 5.0.1 for Raspberry Pi build

Test 1: 32.86 seconds

Test 2: 31.73 seconds

Test 3: 31.19 seconds

Pi 2: openELEC 5.0.1 for Raspberry Pi-2 build

Test 4: 13.92 seconds

Test 5: 13.39 seconds

Test 6: 13.35 seconds
