Maybe ssh is turned off?
No, ssh is definetely turned on. I get access and am asked for username then password...

Even so, the correct username is "root" and the correct password is "rasplex", so if these do not work for you (they are identical to one pair you mentioned), then something must be wrong at the SSH client end.
I did have some odd problems myself in my first attempts to connect to the SSH server of the new OE5 OS, which turned out to be due to me using an obsolete SSH client. That was PuTTY v0.55, and when I replaced it with the current version PuTTY v0.63 those problems disappeared.
So it is a fact that the SSH servers of new RasPlex releases use a more up-to-date version of the SSH protocol, which some old SSH clients can't cope with.
(It wasn't just PuTTY, as the SSH client in the latest version of UltraEdit had a similar problem. Apparently they too need to update their client sources.)

I'm running kwiboos release of the 0.5.1 branch, and for me its root/plexelec

That may be, though kwiboos 'plexelec' release is not RasPlex 0.5.1, or even based on it, but his own modification based on earlier RasPlex source code combined with PHT and OpenELEC code. For genuine RasPlex releases the username and password are "root" and "rasplex".
You should also be aware that kwiboo has now joined the RasPlex team, where he has contributed significantly to the current beta versions of RasPlex.
So the original kwiboo 'plexelec' release is kind of a 'dead end'. His future work of similar kind will be incorporated in future RasPlex releases.

I am aware of that. Just wanted to point out another possible variation. I am eagerly awaiting the 0.6 release, but until then i am quite happy with this "port", as i have many 5.1 aac encoded files, which do not put out multichannel on my equipment with the official release. I haven't encountered any show stoppers so far. Everything works as intended, so i'll be sticking to this until the next official release comes out. Looking forward to the 0.6.x release very much!!
