RasPlex-Droid Remote

RasPlex-Droid App (Jared Rize)

I have created an Android app for controlling the RasPlex installation on a Raspberry Pi. All of the source code is available on github, as well as the .apk file for easy installation. The app will continue to be updated with added features and optimized performance. The app is based off the web-interface designed by Michael Page.

Let me know what you think so far and any changes you would like to see.

I downloaded the ZIP from that site and extracted the precompiled "RasPlex.apk" that it contains.
But attempting to install that apk file on my 'HTC One X' phone fails with the message: "There was a problem parsing the package."
I do the sideloading using 'ES File Explorer' just like I always do for non-GooglePlay apps.

I think you may need to modify something about how that APK is built.
I'm not quite sure though, as the same APK did install correctly to my 'Nexus 7' tablet.

Testing it on the Nexus 7 gave these initial impressions:

Issue 1: The setttings screen and the remote control screen are one and the same.
This makes it almost impossible to use the remote conveniently.

It's just a matter of time until you mess up the IP settings and make an unintentional reconnect with those ruined settings, when they are on the same page as the remote control, which you are operating with at least half your attention directed to the TV screen.

Issue 2:
The DPad controls are too cramped. Even on a Nexus 7 it is hard for normal-sized fingers to press just one of the controls, and it must be even worse on the smaller screen of a phone (though I couldn't test that).

Issue 3:
When turned to landscape mode the Dpad down-arrow and the pause icon overlap.

This is possibly due to the IP settings and connect command still being on screen above the DPad, reducing available space for the remote controls. I realize that the remote is probably intended for use in portrait screen mode, but it should still be possible to use it in landscape mode as well. As I see it portrait mode is obviously best for use with a phone, held in your hand like any other remote controller, but landscape mode is more useful with a tablet (like one placed in a stand on the coffe table in front of the couch where you sit watching TV).

Edit: I've now also tried to install this APK on an old 'Samsung Galaxy Y' phone, but there it again fails to install with the same message about a problem parsing the package.
Btw: The Samsung phone uses a much older Android version '2.3.6 GingerBread'
While the HTC phone uses a fairly recent Android version '4.2.2 (not sure if that's ICS or JellyBean)'
The Nexus 7 on the other hand has an even newer version '4.4.4 KitKat'

This could mean that you need to test the app with some device having an older Android version than you've tested it with so far.
