I've just installed Rasplex and for reasons unknown could not see my PMS server. Signing in to MyPlex resolves this as obviously Myplex knows about my servers, however, I'm convinced RasPlex is not registering with the PMS server so the iOS client cannot control it.
Network connectivity seems good, with RasPlex being able to stream 1080p Blu-ray rip OK. Network connectivity is via TP-Link HomePlug type devices (500Mb versions with Gig-E ports).
Without iOS control, control of RasPlex is painful. CEC seems to be working though my Panny plasma, but it is a bit slow to be really useful.
No. Checked /clients and it is showing 0 so it appears that RasPlex isn't registering at all. How would I seek to narrow down why it is either not trying or perhaps failing? I had the client running on both iPad and iPhone too and neither of them could see the RasPlex client so I am definately inclined to think that this isn't an iOS client issue.
I think I must have some sort of networking issue with broadcast packets or Multicast or whatever Bonjour/Avahi uses. With the RasPlex plugged in to a small TP Link Gig-E switch connected to the rest of the LAN using a TP-Link Homeplug thing, RasPlex does not see the PMS and therefore does not register with it. Running avahi-browse -a on the RasPlex shows some Bonjour services, but none 'off-switch'. Connecting RasPlex directly to my Virgin Media router which, strangely, is also connected to the rest of the network with another Homeplug thing of the same make and model, it sees the PMS and a load of other Bonjour services. Interestingly it cannot see my Virgin Media TIVO box which is connected to the same switch as it was originally.
This raises an interesting side question. Should RasPlex register with the PMS if it is pointed to it directly and/or through myPlex? It doesn't appear to even though it is able to browse and play content from it.
The Plex system requires working multicast for self-detection and configuration. Thus it won’t work across subnets too. (Maybe you just need to enable multicast within your router settings)
Try to set the PMS-IP manually (network settings) or sign in to myplex. This should at least fix your media listing issues. Using the Plex iOS to remote control any PlexHT won’t work with this setup. Try using XBMC control apps to directly remote control RasPlex (This should work - but maybe requieres to manually set the RasPlex IP manually).
As already mentioned: This is not RasPlex specific - it’ a general Plex limitation.
I'm happy to continue trying to work out why one part of my network isn't working with Multicast. It has to be the TP-Link Homeplug thing. RasPlex can see other Bonjour type services including the TIVO box, but nothing else. When moved to a different homeplug, it sees the PMS but not the TIVO. I am happy to leave it where it is at the moment. Finding the PMS can be fixed, but unless it then registers with that PMS for the purposes of remote control, the only control I have is through the TV remote which I don't generally use and is pretty slow.
