My USB 3.0 drive arrived yesterday. The RasPlex interface is now way smoother and noticeably faster.
Can some one add a clear guid on how to setup rasplex to run from usb.

Snap.
I have also just received USB 3.0 dongle and would like a noob_proof guide on how to.
And which specific code to amend on both the sd & usb drives.
Typically, a guide using windows 7 with puTTy for ssh
otherwise I have just created a ubuntu usb flash drive with this http://www.linuxliveusb.com/en/features
so the necessary instructions along either of the 2 approaches above would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I will try and install this on my own today but first i need to go and get a usb flash drive. If i am successful i will post some step by step instructions.

Cool.
I got this USB drive - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007YXA5TC/ref=pe_385721_37038051_pe_217191_31005151_M3T1_dp_1
BUT the drive is showing as 'Local DIsk' & not as 'Removable Disk'
Hence, Rasplex Installer for windows doesn't even acknowledge the USB Drive in the list of devices.
I've searched that Sandisk are not supporting bootable USB drives anymore (as such)
BUT - is there still a way for me to install rasplex onto the USb drive I have bought or not possible?
Thanks in advance
Just to let you all know that I installed RasPlex by using the following method (all from this thread or links within it - thanks to all):
- Get yourself a USB stick, a quick one. I would differ to this article for advice, but I'm using this: Transcend JetFlash 700 16 GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive TS16GJF700 (up to 90MB/s) by Transcend - http://amzn.com/B004HC98C8
- Get yourself an SD card - this does not have to be quick as it's only used at boot. If you already have RasPlex installed on an SD card, you can use your existing one.
- Run RasPlex installer on the USB stick like normal. No further changes needed here.
- If not using an existing one, run RasPlex installer on the SD card
- On the SD Card only, change cmdline.txt file on the to read "boot=/dev/sda1 disk=/dev/sda2 quiet"
(no changes are required on the USB stick)
(in terms of editing, just use any editing app on editing operating system, e.g. Notepad on Windows, editing directly on the SD card. In other words, the simple way) - Insert both the USB stick and the SD card into the Raspberry Pi. For reference, I'm not using a WiFi adapter (just ethernet) nor a USB Keyboard (although I could if I wished).
- It should boot fine. You will have to set up RasPlex again (even if it was previously used on the SD card, but this was effortless in my case) as this is technically a fresh install. You should see the access light on the USB stick flashing when in use (a blue light on the Transcend one linked above).
My girlfriend has commented that she feels it's a lot quicker.

Well having done further research into the Sandisk USB I purcahsed, I've decided to return and have ordered the transcend one you have mentioned.
Can you please elaborate on how/method exactly you edited the cmdline.txt
Via puTTY on win7 or virtual machine perhaps.
Cheers
Firstly I would stay stick with the Sandisk as I would have gotten one if I wasn't under a budget squeeze. The Transcend does work well but I wouldn't mind the $10 extra in normal circumstances.
Secondly, in terms of editing, just use any editing app on editing operating system (e.g. Notepad on Windows, editing directly on the SD card, e.g. the simple way). Editing my post...

Cant stick with the sandisk, as they've gone and adhered to win8 methods of USB flash drives - hence unable to create a bootable USB dongle with this sandisk.
Check out 'Alex K' (RE: Removable Disk) comment and all will be revealed - pretty lame tbh. But never mind, learn something new every day hey!
Your version of USB drive arrives tomorrow.
EDIT:
As it stands, I've managed to get a old 4gb USB drive to boot up correctly.
I edited the original SD card Rasplex install via puTTy for windows - edited the cmdline.txt, inserted the USB rasplex install and rebooted from puTTY - all seems well.
====================================
within puTTY:
Navigation off the bat is more responsive.
Gonna let it cache and come back and see how it handles streaming.
(Streaming >720p off the SD card rasplex install gave mixed results: some clips play, some clips hang but play audio, some clips play for a short amount of time then freeze the pi.)
Seperate question:
I have between 4-5tb of video archive on my PMS - hence advised to expand or increase the size of my EXT4 partition on the USB drive?

Great guide hpka!
installed rasplex today with USB.
1. formatted my SD card and USB stick.
2. wrote rasplex.img file to both the SD card and USB stick
3. changed the cmdline txt file like discribed
4. boot the raspberry pi and use xbmc remote to finish config on your screen
5. enjoy a noticable faster interface!

What kind of USB stick did you use?
What kind of USB stick did you use?
I've used a 32gb Kingston USB 2.0 for this test.. Will test a 3.0 USB too in the next couple of weeks
does raspberry pi support usb 3.0?
does raspberry pi support usb 3.0?
No, the controller is USB 2.0 only.
I have raspbian on my 8gb sd card which I used to overclock my pi. I installed rasplex on a usb memory stick. Can I install rasplex on the same sd card as raspbian or will raspbian get wipe off? If so and I install rasplex on the sd card instead, will my pi still be overclocked?
Thanks

Installing rasplex usually completely destroys all data on the card.
does raspberry pi support usb 3.0?
It barely supports USB 2
If I update rasplex using the built in update function, will that screw up running from USB or will it work ok?
