Rasplex tethered wireless access point + Edimax EW-7811Un

I have a Raspberry Pi 2 running the latest version (0.6.0) of Rasplex.  The install went fine, but I'm looking for 2 additional solutions that I'm hoping someone can help me with.

  1. I need the tethered wireless access point to work, so that I can control Rasplex from my iOS device while in the car.
    1. I see the options to enable wireless access point in the network settings, but when I enable the setting Rasplex says "please wait", the radio button gets turned on and then it turns back off...nothing else happens.
    2. This same card works great with hostapd in raspbian
  2. I also would like to have my media on an external hard drive that is USB powered or a simple USB thumb drive that I can take into the house and load with my media.  Or if I could sync from my main plex server to that same external storage that would be OK too.

Can these things be done?  If so how?  I've been using plex for a long time now and LOVE it and am REALLY looking forward to getting this mobile solution working as well.

Thanks in advance for the help!!!

In response:

1. I assume that you have a USB wireless dongle in your Rasplex Pi.

2. You cannot attach a USB drive to the Rasplex Pi with your media, this is not how Plex works, it needs a server to connect to, there is no sync option in Rasplex, and there won't be in the foreseeable future. Rasplex is a port a Plex HT which is not developed as a mobile solution.

The best way to tackle this is to have one RPi2 with PMS installed with your media installed on a USD hard drive, this can then serve both a second Pi using Rasplex and iOS or Android mobile clients.

I have this setup up and running. For info on how to install PMS on a RPi2 search the forums, there is stacks of info, you will also need to install additional software on the PMS RPi so that it also acts as a wifi router, again information is available across the forums or try googling.

thanks for the reply back.

I was hoping not to have to have to Pis setup just for mobile viewing.

I have Rasbian setup and working on a different SD card.  It is currently running a PMS, and acting as an access point.  The only issue is that I can't remote control PMS from my iOS device.

I might give XBMC / Kodi a shot and see if I can make my dreams come true :)

If you think of anything else that might be useful, please drop me a line.

Thanks again!

So you have a RPi set up as a PMS server, you also need to install and configure isc-dhcp-server as well as hostapd, that way you can connect and play media on your iOS or Android device. You don't really need Rasplex on another Pi, but any other Pi you have Rasplex on will connect.

right -- and that would work great since my kids both have iPads with the Plex app installed.  The problem have is that I want to plug my Pi into the HDMI input of the van and watch the show / movie on the built in screens in the van.  This is why I would need the plex HT, right?  Or is there some way to control PMS and have it output the movie / show to HDMI?

PMS is a server only, it has no output directly. That's why I suggested a second RPi2 will Rasplex installed, would also need a wifi dongle to be able to connect to your main RPi PMS/router, plug that into your HDMI port to feed the screens, I use my setup (1 RPi2 as Server, 1 RPi2 as as Rasplex Client), in hotels to connect to their TVs.

I came up with a little bit different solution:

Raspberry Pi 2 running Raspbian, isc-dhcp-server, hostapd and PMS

unused iPod touch (4th generation) with the Plex app installed and HDMI cable

Hooked the iPod touch into the van HDMI input, controlled the iPod touch from my iPhone using the Plex app and voila!

Thanks again for the help and suggestions.  Can't wait to test this out in the real world!
