Re-Installing the Plex Media Server on the QNAP remotely

Hi everyone,

I have a TS-251+ NAS back in the UK and am currently in the Netherlands. I have previously been able to enjoy watching my NAS stored media on my PS3 in the UK and my PS3 in the Netherlands, however today I was unable to connect to the server on my PS3 in the Netherlands.

In trying to fix the issue, I stupidly deleted the Plex Media Server on my Plex Account via the Web Access. I now have no servers showing for my account.

I am unable to open Plex via the “myqnapcloud” as it’s not supported, so cannot set up the media server from what I can tell whilst being abroad?.

I have un-installed and re-installed Plex on the QNAP, but am unable to link the media server to my account?

Is there any way I can do this remotely, or will I have to wait until whenever I return to the UK?

Many thanks in advance for any assistance and please let me know if any additional information would help? Hopefully the above makes sense and apologies for any incorrect terminology.

Many thanks

David

If you have ssh access to it, try this:

Otherwise, read this:

(Look for: On a Different Network)

Hi Dane, many thanks for the suggestions.

I get the following error with “Claim it” - Unable to connect to the remote server - Fatal Error, Job error. I guess because I don’t have ssh or because the server hasn’t been set up again locally?

I can access the web app, but the server is no longer there after I accidently removed it in the hope I could refresh it and it would re-connect. I removed the server in the web app.

I guess I will just have to wait until I return to the UK and set it up again locally. Only 6 or so weeks to go :confounded:

I guess the server doesn’t like too many different connections from similar devices. Either way, most annoying that it wouldn’t connect on the PS3 and I stupidly removed it without checking it could be added again remotely.

Any other suggestions welcome, but doubt I can do anything without being local.

Cheers

David

Has to be run directly on the QNAP, via SSH

Your option now is the support article I linked towards

Thanks Dane,

Alas, trying with putty give me a network error and connection time out. I’m probably doing something wrong…

It is the device IP I am trying to communicate with rather than the public IP right?

And is there anything I need to do via the “myqnapcloud” to ensure I can access the server remotely?

I’m worried that as I deleted the server from plex, just re-adding the app to the NAS might not be enough to set up the server again?

I think my only hope now is the local connection when back home to set up the plex server and allow remote access again right??

Annoying that Plex won’t open remotely as if it were at home via the cloud.

Cheers

David

It’s the public ip

Nope, that abomination has nothing to do with it.

I assume you on your firewall had a port forwarding from QNAP:32400 to Public:Some_Port

You need to access Public:Some_Port

Alas no port forwarding is set up and it seems that I have switched off the remote access of the router.

Looks like when I get back I need to switch that on and set up port forwarding.

I had hoped that as I could access the NAS externally, I could do everything remotely.

Thanks for all your help, it’s been an interesting learning experience. I am predominantly a plug n play guy, but issues like this help me to learn to prevent issues like this from happening again!

Guess i’m waiting till i’m home then, or asking my non techy friend to go over to my house and re-install the plex server :joy:
