After password reset my Plex media server on QNAP Nas is completely unfindable in the Plex web app. I tried reconnecting. I tried stop and restart. I tried reinstalling Plex media server. I tried different browsers. I tried different operating systems. All my music photo and video files are completely obscured in the Plex app. Before taking my loss and leaving Plex altogether is there anything that could be done?
Changing your password logged you out of the Plex Media Server. You will need to reclaim it.
See this post: (Re-)Claiming a QNAP Plex Media Server
Thank you Ford,
It does say This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.
<MediaContainer size="0" claimed="0" machineIdentifier="6a75542ae4b3f1a7bfe8c4cecee7cb06bf1072ad" version="1.23.4.4805-186bae04e"> </MediaContainer>"
But I cannot find the server under general.
I did delete 3 words in de preference file as recommended in another post, but I did not backup the original.
My preference file looks like:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<Preferences OldestPreviousVersion="1.23.4.4805-186bae04e" MachineIdentifier="559b3cc1-d1bd-40ed-aec4-41ca2e9c5335" ProcessedMachineIdentifier="6a75542ae4b3f1a7bfe8c4cecee7cb06bf1072ad" AnonymousMachineIdentifier="31a3157b-ce5e-4266-a4bf-117091d02754" MetricsEpoch="1" CloudSyncNeedsUpdate="0" AcceptedEULA="1" PublishServerOnPlexOnlineKey="1" DvrIncrementalEpgLoader="0" PubSubServer="139.162.215.242" PubSubServerRegion="lhr" CertificateVersion="3" LanguageInCloud="1" PubSubServerPing="63" LastAutomaticMappedPort="0" allowMediaDeletion="0" autoEmptyTrash="1" DlnaEnabled="1" FSEventLibraryUpdatesEnabled="1" ScheduledLibraryUpdatesEnabled="1" LogVerbose="0" PushNotificationsEnabled="1" logDebug="1" sendCrashReports="1" ManualPortMappingMode="1" LanNetworksBandwidth="192.168.2.100" PreferredNetworkInterface="eth0" allowedNetworks="192.168.2.100" CinemaTrailersFromLibrary="0" GlobalMusicVideoPathMigrated="1" DlnaClientPreferences="IP=192.168.2.107,DirectPlay=true,DirectStream=true,LocalResolution=1920x1080,RemoteResolution=1280x720,OnlineResolution=1280x720,LocalVideoQuality=74,RemoteVideoQuality=49,OnlineVideoQuality=49,SubtitleSize=100,AudioBoost=100,MusicBitrate=192"/>
I still did not succeed in reclaiming my server. PLEASE help me further. Should I delete all Plex stuff on my NAS and try a brand new installation?
Thank you Ford,

Solution
Claimed = 0
means the server is still unclaimed.
Are you comfortable using SSH/CLI?
If so, look at: Server credential reset utility for Linux-based platforms
That will definitely claim your Plex Media Server.
I’ve tested it on Synology & Linux, and others have tested it on QNAP.
The link has the details, but the basic are:
a) get a claim token from plex.tv/claim
b) run the script with the claim code.
sudo ./UserCredentialReset.sh claim-xxxxxxx
Unfortunately I don not know how to place something like this in a root or host
A couple of questions:
-
Are you on the same network as the QNAP?
Not using a VPN or other remote connection? -
What is the IP address of the QNAP?
Should be 192.168.x.x; 10.x.x.x, or 172.x.x.x.
Those are private addresses, not routed to the Internet. It is OK to post them. My Synology is 192.168.1.50.
yes, same network. 192.168.2.100
Thanks.
Use a incognito browser window and go to http://192.168.2.100:32400/web.
What happens?
When I try that on my server, I get the Plex logo, then a setup page.
Then I can login and see everything except my server
If you click on Settings, the wrench icon, you don’t see your server listed on the left side?
Just to double check, you’re using http, not https, correct?
Strange that is responds OK to http://192.168.2.100:32400/identity but won’t let you claim it.
Yes, it is strange. Yes I was using http
I did delete 3 words in the preference file yesterday. One of the earlier posts said that I should delete three words. Unfortunately I didn’t make a backup of the original.
One more thing to try. I just ran through this on my server.
It will re-run you through the setup pages. When you see the one for your media libraries, skip through it, do not make any changes. When you’re through the setup pages, you should be able to reach your server settings, and the server should already be claimed.
Stop Plex.
Rename preferences.xml to preferences.xml.old
Start Plex.
Wait ~1 min for Plex to start.
Then go to http://192.168.2.100:32400/web
You should get the standard Plex login page.
I ran through the steps again after renaming preferences.xml.
It is a pain, since I have to go through my server settings (this returns them to defaults), but libraries are intact and I can pin them to my home page if desired.
Here’s what happened w/ my Synology DS918+:
Using an incognito browser window. http://192.168.1.50:32400/web (local IP address of my NAS)
-
Standard Plex login streen. Enter email and password.
-
http://192.168.1.50:32400/web/index.html#!/setup/…
I see the spinning orange circle for ~60 seconds.
Since I’m impatient, I refreshed the web page. -
Receive the “How Plex Works” page. Click on “Got It”
-
Receive server setup page.
Can enter server name, enable remote access.
click Next. -
Takes ~30 seconds, then Media Library appears.
All my libraries are listed. Make no changes.
click Next. -
Finish Setup page.
click Done. -
Standard Plex home page.
No libraries are pinned. -
Select wrench icon (setup).
-
I’m in. Server and config options in left panel like normal.
Settings → General shows server is signed in with my id/password.
Have to go through server settings again - configure remote access, etc., but I’ve access to my server.
Big thank you to FordGuy!
The .old restart finally did the trick
I have been beating my head against the wall on this unclaimed server problem for a while. My problem and the steps I have taken seem to be very similar to Maurice’s. However, I am inexperienced with Linux in general and do not know how to access the “preferences.xml” file to rename it. That is where my efforts end. I access my QNAP through my Windows PC. Can you provide a little more guidance? It would be greatly appreciated.
Use the PlexData share, and read about the procedure here:
That worked for me as well. You can use the script.
I double-checked that the claim status is 0 by inquiring at http://198.168.0.123:32400/identify and I also checked at /web to see if my server appears and it does not. I am not sure how to proceed.
