Reasons why Plex for XBONE is rubbish.

Hey guys,

 

Is anybody else having these issues using Plex on Xbox One?

 

1) Stacked media files - i.e. when a movie is split into CD1 & CD2 - it cant figure out how to piece them together (however, other plex applications have no problems doing this)

 

2) Starts a movie 1 hour and 20 minutes in... you have to back out and restart the episode. why?!

 

3) No feature to play music stored on my plex server.

 

4) When scrolling through media to select a film/tv show, it shows blank options and forgets where it is alphabetically.

 

5) srt enabled files.. not figured out the black art of this yet.. but ultimately neither have plex yet. (did anyone have Boxee? - boxee nailed this feature, plex need to take a page out of their book for subtitles)

 

im sure their is more things which annoy me...

 

any body help with these issues?

Many/most of these issues are being addressed with the next release of Plex for XB1.  

This is a big release with a lot of new and fixed features in it.

It was submitted to MS for approval and came back with a couple of issues they are working on before resubmitting.

It is currently a preview release for plex pass members, NOT a full and complete client.

It's actually not the only client that requires Plex Pass as all the preview releases do:

1. Xbox One

2. Xbox 360

3. Playstation 3 & 4

4. Smart TVs

5. New Roku interface

As said above by dent, all of the above are in development and haven't been actually released yet.

hey, Boxee has a feature within the application which downloads subtitle files. it was great. very smooth.

fair point, bud. i probably should have caveated that by saying, its the only application i use which i pay for (which i find frustrating) - ipad/iphone/web apps.. great

You can use OpenSubtitles (or your own SRTs, or whatever other format you want) with Plex - https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200471113-Configuring-Subtitle-Support

Once you have those, you can bring up the settings view in the video player and select which one you want to use. Please yell if that doesn't work out for you, or what boxee does that's better here.

(and tbh, saying the app is 'rubbish' does irk the 'developers' a little bit  ;) ) (but I've heard worse. 'bobbins' would have been way more offensive :P)

hey, boxee lets you pick & download subtitles whilst youre actually watching a movie. (as long as it was correctly matched) it was really user friendly.

MKV files currently need to be remuxed for the Xbox One so depending on your server that could be what is causing your skipping.  We would need to see your Plex Media Server.log to tell you for sure if it is being caused by a remux/transcode.  Also, is your server connected over WiFi or is wired through ethernet?  I have seen the disconnects, but as I am running over a wired connection it normally happens to me if I have let the Xbox sit for a period of time and I am able to select retry and it plays right where it left off from.

Even on a full Transcode of a 40Mbps Bluray rip in MKV I do not see any stuttering (And currently there is a 20Mbps cap so if you have a file above that bit rate it will need to be transcoded).  So while it could be something in the app we would first need to try and rule out something weird happening in your setup.

Your DLNA TV more than likely is direct playing the MKV's instead of remuxing/transcoding unless you installed a custom DLNA profile for your LG TV.

Another user reported finding their logs at this location on FreeNAS 9.3:

here is some of my log i saw jurassic park  thats one of the mkv movies that skips.   also Since I have updated plex every so often I have to restart the server because it locks up or something and cant be accessed on Freenas its easy you just restart the jail but a pita none the less anyone else have this issue?

Either way however it works on the TV vs the xbox app its still an issue that I feel needs attention.   If someone is going to tell me its cause how the different media is handled and thats it, I dont feel like thats a good answer for this considering you need to pay for a plex pass to use the xbox app.

The log entry you posted doesn't include any lines with a video starting call or transcode session so it is very hard to try and diagnose what could be causing your issue.

Unfortunately, media being handled differently by different devices isn't something that Plex can really control.  The extra codecs needed to be released from Microsoft before they could be directly played,  It is possible, that just the next update will fix that as Dom has stated that MKV's will be direct played and the bit rate limit was removed.  But until that release is approved by Microsoft the only thing we can currently do is try and make things work the way they are now.  

I have played high bit rate MKV's that needed to be remuxed or transcoded so I know the App can handle it, it is just a matter of figuring out what is causing the difference.
