I have the following problem: I have the German series Medicopter 117, which is not correctly assigned to the individual seasons on TVDB via DVD order, and the pilot film is also incorrectly listed as episode 1 of season 1, which is why Plex constantly messes up the order.
I have captured all the data correctly and named it with FileBot, and I have also created NFO files so that Plex displays the correct description for each episode, but unfortunately it does not load this from the NFO.
How can I force Plex to use the data in the NFO, especially if it is not correctly assigned in TVDB?
I have checked Local Media Asset and moved it up, but it still doesn’t work.

Plex does not (yet) support NFO files.
One of the devs recently announced, they’re currently preparing this for a release in 2026.
For now, you could use .plexmatch files to point Plex to the correct matching.
Did you find the correct order anywhere on TMDb or TheTVDb or is this purely manual metadata assignment?
I know about the NFO support because, unfortunately, some series are really wrong or sometimes not completely assigned on TVDB, and on TMDB it finds the order, even if only with air order, but not the descriptions of the individual episodes.
I don’t understand why I can’t just use any website in Plex and why nfo support hasn’t been available for a long time. After all, Plex isn’t free with Plex Pass, so it should have been standard for a long time.
The episode order on that page seems to be in line with the Aired Order listed on TMDb (same for TheTVDb… except the DVD order seems to be a mess / incomplete).
Only, TMDb’s seems to have no descriptions for the episodes from season 3 onwards. Given TMDb is a community supported platform… why not simply add those descriptions to their repository instead of keeping your local copy in NFO files?
Both TMDb and TheTVDb seem to list the pilot as a double-length single episode, while your page is listing it as a two-parter.
Could be anything from copyright / licensing of their data to if/how they make an API available. If you’re capable to handle it, you could use Plex’s new API to create your own “metadata provider” to integrate data from that source (assuming they allow it).
Plex also doesn’t come with a parachute, although those have been around for decades
I’ll second Tom80H’s suggestion to update TMDB. I complained about nfo support/using IMDB for tv show matching as well. Someone suggested the same thing. I ended up updating TMDB and I’m glad I did. Its really pretty easy.
I have now created a Python scrypt and updated the whole thing with the Plex API. Now the descriptions are in place, I could have come up with them myself, but sometimes you just can’t think straight.
I have been waiting for this feature since 2020, hoping for official support this year.
Previously, I used an XBMC patch to enable NFO support, but updates over the past two years have severely broken the patch’s functionality. After each update, automatic library scans using the proxy would cause the NAS host to crash. This problem could only be solved by rebuilding the media library.
However, these issues are now a thing of the past. After a recent update, the XBMC proxy option disappeared entirely. I have since rebuilt my entire media library on Emby and do not plan to use Plex again until it officially supports local NFO files.
I’m a longtime Plex user, but I haven’t used my Plex server in recent years.
I am also concerned about what is going on with this issue. I have a similar problem. Plex does not display the correct age rating for me, and I have written many of my own plot summaries for my movies.
I have saved them all as NFO files. Ten years ago, it worked perfectly; Plex imported the content summary directly from the NFO file.
Now I reimported all my old movies, and nothing worked. In the library settings I have “Prefer local metadata” enabled and also “use local assets.”
So what could I try to make it work? I already took a look at the manual “Advanced settings Plex Movie Agent”.
Is NFO no longer supported, or what’s the clue? I can edit every movie on its own, change every field, and paste in my own summary, but that’s a lot of work. That’s where the NFO is practical. These manual entries also have to be saved somewhere?
YES, it’s being worked on.
NO, I am not at liberty to disclose any details but there is a LOT of work for this.
Unfornately NO, I don’t have an ETA but judging by the activity, SOON.
