Recomend a Video Capture Device for HD, Either HDMI or Component Video Connection.

Hi.
Since I am forced to record channels like CNN etc. on my cable box (Plex DVR is worthless here).

I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a capture device that will capture the cable box HD video when I play the recording back.

Or maybe another recommendation??

Thanks

I don’t know if HDMI capture devices can capture DVR playback due to DRM, but if it’s possible the hardware depends on your setup. I have an Elgato HD 60 S USB3 capture card that works great, and I also have a Blackmagic DeckLink Mini Recorder 4K internal card that is amazing.

One way to is get this to work is with Hauppauge HD-PVR 60 and use NextPVR and you don’t even need a HDMI splitter and you can just point the Library setup to recording folder and Plex will see the recording, but you have use NextPVR TV Guide.
The other option is SageTV but you will need HDMI splitter there are a few plugin one called is Plex Scanner and BMT Agent for SageTV which maybe your best beat to look at or you can always just point the Library setup to recording folder and Plex will see the recording just sure to enable episode name in SageTV, Keep mind like NextPVR you have used SageTV TV Guide.
Both of them you will need to have one schedules direct acct for EPG which $25 a year and there no direct way to integration 3rdparty for that you have to look at Emby and NextPVR Plugin it has integration.
Now IR Blaster there few diff way you can if one need one capture card then just used the Hauppauge IR Blaster for changing channels both the above support it.
If you set-top has Component video connectors then I recommendation get HD-PVR 2 or Colossus 2.
Hope lee Plex will look at my post that did today about the TBS Technologies which has a BDA architecture compatible Video Capture Card TBS6301 being that what they want.

I’ve never tried it but presumably products like the HDFury and HDMI Doctor can solve handshake issues and allow for recording via HDMI (HDCP). Supposedly even the latest 4K can be captured using something like the Elgato Game Capture 4K60 Pro (~$400 USD) and HDFury 4K (~$200 USD).

One only need to look for a ViewHD 2 Port 1x2 Powered HDMI Mini Splitter for 1080P & 3D | Model: VHD-1X2MN3D for at or less then $20
LoL Elgato Game Capture 4K60 Pro is RAW Video format better have lot disk space Octavean

My Blackmagic is $185 and does 4k/30, but since the OP is asking about getting DVR recordings, and there is no such thing as broadcast 4k, that is beyond what he needs.

For what it’s worth, it wasn’t a recommendation but rather an example that even 4K HDMI / HDCP 2.0 may not be an issue with respect to capture. Something I am still somewhat surprised about.

Currently I see no practical need of it or I would likely have invested in the hardware.

shspvr , yeah, and nah,… I currently have 16x 8TB HDDs for a total of about 128TB of storage but as stated before I have no need or desire to get into 4K video at the moment even if I had access to a source (which I don’t).

And even if capturing is possible with the DRM issue, capturing raw 4K content requires a lot of space and incredibly fast drives and/or RAID. I capture raw 4K from my camera and even with a RAID 0 setup with 4 drives it’s only barely fast enough to capture 4K @ 30fps, and the 4TB array fills up pretty darned quick!

A lot of good input!!
Thanks a lot.
No 4K need, just capture DVR playback from my cable box which is 1080i
The content is coming from Spectrum (Time Warner Cable) who DRMs everything, making my HD Homerun with Plex DVR useless.
So I assume playback over component has DRM removed on playback. Not sure about DRM or HDCP over the HDMI output.
(I assume component video out is DRM and HDCP free as my Sling Box has no trouble with the content)
Any other advice is welcome.

Thanks again.

Component video output has no DRM nor HDCP like HDMI dose so you should be good go there.

Thanks I assumed that…
So which device described here accepts component video in???
They all seem to be HDMI…

Yes, you can grab component output and not have any DRM - it’s an analog signal.

So far all I have found are capture boxes with HDMI.
Can’t find one with Component Video in…

HD-PVR 2 or Colossus 2 has A/V input even the older 1gen HD-PVR and Colossus all have Component video input
You can get Component to HDMI Converter Adapter Box

Think This will do the job??

Yes and best part it is a Real Hardware AVC/H264 encoder

What do you think about this one??
No PC required.

It same as HD-PVR Rocket with very same hardware inside you fine a lot clone of them like that one
HD-PVR Rocket has 3rdpaty support which also be use in NextPVR but do really want to manuel record it nice but I’m lazy LoL.

Thanks!!!
Since Plex DVR is useless in this situation, I WILL have to manually do it… LOL
