Recommendations on server hardware/software

So it appears PMS will no longer support OSX 10.8, which I’m using on a Hackintosh and don’t feel like trying to upgrade (it’s a pain), so now I’m in the market for either a new machine to run the PMS on, or trying to wipe the Hackintosh and run Linux on it or something.

I’ve looked at all the various options but really can’t decide what to run. I’d REALLY like to find something that’s not hard to use or hard to upgrade the OS or Plex (like some of the Linux options seem to be), so I’d like to get any and all recommendations from people that have used various hardware/software as to what would give me the least headaches.

Budget?

I want to try and stay below 500 (or just replace the OS on the current Hackintosh with something easily updateable)…

That said, has anyone made an embedded Plex server I could install on my PC box?
(I’m assuming not since I don’t see one anywhere, but just thought I’d ask)

You should be able to build a system for under $500 that can run PMS quite well. Storage aside, that’s uniquely dependent on each user’s needs.
