What OS should I use?

Hi all. I run plex server on my server in a Windows 7 hyper v on a SSD. The problem I have is that the ssd is quite small so the Windows 10 host and Windows 7 vim are about 100gb on a 120 drive. Often it runs out of space so the plex vim will shut down.

I want to keep the plex server running on a SSD as it seems quicker than when it’s on a spinning disc, so I’m looking for a lighter weight OS to run plex so.

Q1 what OS is light and reliable, unto date on latest plex server version and regularly updated by plex?
Q2 can I migrate my show status across from my win7 OS to the new OS?

Not bothered about difficulty level as I love a challenge!

Forgot to say server spec is high, 24 core 36gb ram.x5650 Xeon x2

Choose the OS you feel most comfortable with. I’m running PMS on OS X Yosemite (I refuse to update to El Capitan) but I’m more or less “forced” due to the hardware.
I think I would lean towards Linux is I were to build new PMS.
If were to use Windows I would go with Windows Server. Every platform is good and bad at the same time. Choose your own flavor based on your experience and likeness factor.
Yes you can migrate your database from current OS:

Thanks. Think I will go for linux

This is the best advice possible. You’ll be the one having to troubleshoot it, so use what you know. I personally use Win7, but my user base is pretty small only (about 5 users). I will stick with Win7 until I need to replace the hardware (maybe in another year or two)…then go to Win10. I have no plans to go to Server as I just don’t need it for what I do.

I run mine on a server in a freebsd jail with no issues
Problem on here is ask 5 people and will get a different answer when it comes to which OS version

I know it’s already been said, but I strongly advise people to run the OS you know. Learning an OS and learning the ins and outs of Plex combined can be daunting. Once you know how Plex works, then set up another box with a different OS if you want to, to learn that. And then move (or set up a second) your Plex install.

If you know Linux, us it. Prepare for permissions issues. If you know Windows more, use that, but prepare for it’s own set of issues. Mac the same way…

Each OS has it’s own quirks, and things aren’t 100% the same across the board. Just be ready for surprises. You need more than basic skills in a lot of trouble shooting cases. Just because someone can find the power button 3 times in a row doesn’t mean they are ready to install and administer a Plex server… (As we se on these forums almost every day!)

And you cannot buy a second SSD for this machine to dedicate to the VM?

I love FreeBSD, Linux is good too, and I hate to discourage someone from getting away from horrid Windows, but… given the ridiculously low-cost of SSD drives now, why stay on such a restrictively-small SSD? Especially if you have the money for a server that is extremely-high in all other specs. I don’t understand why you’re disproportionately handicapping your server.

I bought a Ferrari but only put 13" wheels on it… anyone know of a good racetrack I can use that will work ok?
