Recommended Library Error

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3830
Player Version#: Web, Android, TV, etc

It does not matter what player I try to use. After the latest Plex update I now get an error on every library if “recommended” tab is selected. The error says “There was an unexpected error loading this library”. Switching tabs to “Library” or “Collections” works and I can find / play all of my media under those tabs. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

Same here. The “Recommended” tab on all my devices says my library can’t be found but the “Library” tab shows everything. This is especially bad if you’re using an Amazon fire stick as “recommended” is the Home Screen and can’t be changed, so you can’t access anything. I’ve been searching the threads for days. No one has a fix for this.

Plex a solution for this would be awesome. I’ve been paying for Plex about 5 years now (maybe longer) and this issue has made all of my Sony TV’s unusable. Going to start looking into alternative solutions if Plex doesn’t offer some sort of help fixing the problem.

Here is a copy of my logs for anyone willing to help with this. I have attempted to “Repair Corrupt Database” per instructions found here with no success - https://support.plex.tv/articles/201100678-repair-a-corrupt-database/?_ga=2.100435927.856985260.1609183597-617451568.1608155032

I just happened upon this thread.

Preface: I am on the Linux / server side of this equation .

Looking at the logs provided and reading about database corruption, not to be harsh, but points to the underlying system (either abrupt power-off or forced termination). Those two will corrupt a database in a blink every time. When running a server, a UPS, even a small one, will provide the time needed (only a few seconds) for PMS to shutdown gracefully and close the DB versus leaving stuff “scattered everywhere”.

As for the “Recommended” tab - that’s maintained by PMS in the database.

The very first thing I suspect is damage. Not necessarily DB corruption but a loss of sync between the DB and the cache files supporting it.

Something else I’m also seeing in the logs is a lot of media being analyzed.
There is no indication if this is new media or existing being re-analyzed for loudness, etc.

Either way, any media analysis will put a serious load on a system like this (performance level = 1700 Passmarks). My Recommendation is to go to Scheduled Tasks and look for things which don’t need constant updating and turn it off.

(e.g. Posters don’t update very often so why refresh them every 7 days ?)

The server is on a UPS. This problem arose immediately after upgrading to the latest version of Plex Media Server.

Definitely see your point in analyzing existing files less frequently. I’ll make some adjustments there.

@ChuckPa do you have a solution to fix the loss of sync between DB and Cache files?

They will stay in sync given enough time or CPU.

I think the amount of analysis being redone over & over is the root cause here.
That being a likely cause; occasional restart of the server forces everything to properly flush to disk and the database to fold its caches into the main DB.
You can do this until you’re able to procure a stronger machine to use as the server.

From a usability perspective, the sooner you can upgrade to something faster than 1700 Passmarks the better off you’ll be.

As a comparison, the J4125 CPU (used in QNAP and Synology NAS systems) has almost 2x the performance (3160 Passmarks)

A 2012 i7-3740qm (mobile cpu) clocks in at 8000+ Passmarks.

Restarting the server did absolutely nothing to fix the problem. Also, I don’t think purchasing a faster machine will solve it because playback works just fine. The library shows up without problems. It is ONLY a problem with the recommended tab (which many plex users have complained about). If I could turn that tab off I would but alas that’s not an option the developers have given us. Since we aren’t allowed to get rid of the non-working feature can we at least get information on how to fix it when it stops working.

I can’t believe no one has a fix for this. The “Recommended” tab is totally worthless now (not that I ever needed it) but it’s stupid to even have it there it’s not going to show me anything.

I will try to help figure out what’s going on here with folks but Recommended does work.

In this screenshot , you can see what I recently added for family and friends who I share with. You also see the “Start Watching” which are things were completed and now sit 'idle"

For those with problems:

  1. Verify Debug logging ON; Verbose logging OFF (save if changed)
  2. Restart Plex (let me see the startup)
  3. wait 2 minutes
  4. Recreate the “Recommended” tab failure in Plex/web
  5. Download the logs ZIP file.
  6. Provide a D/L link to that zip (until the forum repairs are completed)
