Refresh rate option with Plex HTPC - HDMI handshake issue

Server Version#: 1.30.1.6497
Player Version#: 1.31.1.3412-f3195b0d

Setup used in in our outdoor area

Windows 11 22H2 HTPC (AMD 2700X and RX580X) ------ Denon X1500H ------- Samsung NU8000 55 inch

Everything works just fine except some minor judder when playing content and issues with the splash startup screen and a black screen on exit (assume the screen is changing refresh rate).

I have tried various option on the HTPC, the Denon and the Samsung.

I have also tried Refresh Rate switching in Plex HTPC with various delays.

The issue.
The HTPC appears to lose HDMI handshake with the Denon if Plex HTPC Refresh Rate switching is enabled.

Changing delay has no effect.

I have to physically turn off the Denon and negotiate the handshake again. This doesn’t always work as the screen loses connection.

I have tried utilising direct connection of the HTPC with the Samsung but ARC is problematic.

I have also looked into modifying the EDID and the pin 19 trick. Both are not really good options.

I wonder if I could run another video signal from the RX580X displayport to the TV for video and use the RX580X HDMI port to the Denon for audio only ?

The TV would just use the video signal and the Denon would just use the audio signal ?

Would there by voice sync issues ?

might work but could requiere an HDMI dummy plugged into the avr HDMI out. No idea if windows (or any other os) would recognize the AVR without display EDID information. I guess the only way to find out if it works is to try it.

Have you tried disabling HDMI link assurance or disabling HDCP? HDCP is an absolute pita… and is enabled by default on AMD gpus… It’s also luckily not necessary for Plex…

Tried it late last night and sadly, did not work. The audio is linked to the main display.

I did try both. I actually had link assurance disabled already.

Disabling HDCP is easy with AMD but it did not have any impact and it does cause issues with other streamers such as Netflix.

It does all work if I run Plex in a window maximised (obvious why it does) so that appears to be my only option for now. I can live with Windows bottom and top bar showing.

Definitely an issue caused by the Denon. Maybe lightning will hit it one day and insurance can update it

Thanks for the reply - appreciated.

I may have fixed the handshake issue by accident

I used to use an old iOS app called DeRemote.

Was actually an awesome app but no longer developed but still functions.

I decided to use it tonight and found an HDMI video mode with options Auto, Movie and Game.

This is not normally a function in the X1500H but using the DeRemote app actually brought up the options on the Denon display and I selected Auto.

Plex now works as expected (splash screen still not right) and the offical Denon app shows input as 4K 24P 3D as well as output with Plex playing - this is wrong as media is 1080P but at least playback works.

Will see if I can sort that tomorrow but it appears to be a lucky dip.

Note: when the app is not fullscreen, it disables refresh rate matching so you are effectively disabling this pref.

Absolutely (as described by Plex and I wrote my comment in parenthesis about that, which you quoted) but at that time, it was the only way to run Plex and the daisy chain setup I have clearly handled that better than fullscreen as I got no stutter. If I went fullscreen, without refresh rate match. stutter. So, something is happening with refresh rate match on and in maximised mode as no stutter.

Now that I discovered the ‘secret’ option in the Denon, I can run Plex full screen with the refresh rate match on and no stutter. The Denon is also now reporting 24 correctly as before it was reporting 60.

Note this option on the Denon is in the menu of higher end Denons - they even get a disable option. I only have Auto, Movie and Game. Have set it to Auto so I am guessing some interefernce by the Denon but all I can do.

Now, if I could only make the splash screen and entry/exit work (black screens)…

I thought your parenthetical comment was sarcastic. Hopefully that makes my reply make more sense.

There are several OS and driver-level optimizations which apply when an app is fullscreen which is likely responsible for the stutter you would see. It could be a game-related setting such as VRR or anti-aliasing. These have caused issues in the past.

No and Yes

Well, the Denon was reporting RR of 60 when using Plex prior to me using the ‘secret’ option on the Denon. It now reports a RR of 24 when using Plex.

Whatever the option does on the Denon, it now causes the correct frame rate to be in place. I didn’t make any other changes. Stutter/judder has gone.

Ideally, I’d like to be able to disable any processing by the Denon as far as video goes but it works (except for the splash screen, which kind of works)

Edit - I don’t game at all. All game related settings are off. It most definitely was the Denon at fault but that is sorted now it seems as there is no stutter/judder playing Plex full screen with refresh rate match option enabled.

I spoke to the local Denon senior tech and he wasn’t even aware that menu was on the X1500H. He did say in Auto it will recognise HDMI feed and adjust as necessary. Magic

I guess I could try Movie and Game modes but it works on Auto.
