Plex HTPC (Win) refresh rate switching and 25 fps video

Here’s a problem that I am not sure how to handle…

  1. I have Plex HTPC (Win) set to change the display refresh rate to match the video fps.
  2. I have a video file ripped from a PAL DVD, and the video info shows 25 fps.
  3. My USA display (Sony projector) cannot handle 25 fps, so if I play this file in Plex HTPC I get a blue screen.

Plex HTPC is not exactly behaving incorrectly, it’s changing the display refresh rate as instructed. But it’s an unsupported value that will never work.

It seems like Plex HTPC should ask the display what refresh rates are allowed, and not try to use a forbidden value.

As long as there are regional differences in refresh rates available on displays, it seems like the Plex client should be aware of this kind of problem.

It actually does. You can have a look at your Plex HTPC log, there it logs every resolution/ frequency combi that is advertised by your TV/projector/display to windows. Plex HTPC is not switching to a resolution that is not part of that list.

Can you also please upload a log, of where you experienced the issue?

I haven’t been able to get refresh rate switching to work at all with my setup reliably

Thought it was my Denon but it isn’t as I isolated the Denon.

I get no display signal most of the time unless I fall back to low FR and low display res.

I have HDMI 2B on all gear and it should handle the FR and res combination.

I am running 8K certified 2.1 cables and have tried multiple other cables of various standards.

I now just rely on the Samsung TV to do pull-down which is bearable.

Edit - I can make it all work by running the HTPC as 1080P and not UHD. I have settled on that for now as I mentioned in another thread. With our viewing distance and eyes, 1080P is all we need and the TV can upscale as necessary.

Good to know it should be doing that. I’ll have a closer look and see if I can get a log file.

At first glance, I see that Windows detects the projector as a “generic PnP” display. If I look at “list all modes,” none show 25 Hz. .

An additional complication is that I am using an A/V receiver between the PC and the projector. Windows actually detects the display as my Onkyo receiver–not the Sony projector. But the Onkyo does appear to correctly detect the supported modes, and provide them to Windows under the “generic PnP” device.
