I have a lifetime plex pass and from what I understand relay is included. I’ve never used it before and always just accessed my plex remotely vpning into my network. I wanted to give relay a shot and see how it worked, but it doesn’t seem to be working for me.
I have enable relay in network turned on. I have remote access disabled but it doesn’t work with it enabled either. I disable upnp on my network as I consider UPnP a security risk and do not use it. I do not allow port forwarding.
Am I missing something or is this feature just marketing junk that doesn’t work?
it has to be enabled, relay is a fall back when it remote access does not work when it is enabled. If you disable remote access you are tell it you don’t want things to reach your server and it won’t try relay.
You would need to be more specific about your network. I’m gonna guess maybe a DNS thing but if you are concerned about port forwarding then do you have firewalls, or other thing like that blocking traffic. Everything has to come in over a port. port forwarding just lock something into a specific one. Other apps can’t use the same port if another is already using it. Your server logs may have some info on where it is failing.
I run a Unifi network. I set my network to use a mix of google and cloudflare dns (8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1) Plex is allowed through the firewall. It works perfectly on my home network and if I VPN into my network. I’ve tried cloudflare, google and mullvad dns on the remote side when trying to use relay.
From what I understood relay uses plex servers as a man in the middle so that you don’t need port forwarding/upnp.
Where in my logs would be a good place to look at why it might be failing>
lines with MyPlex is it trying to set up remote access. Search for lines with relay for when it tries that in the plex media server.log ( there are 6 of them kept as they roll over, the one with no number is the newest and number 5 is the oldest
Well this is weird it’s working now and I really haven’t changed anything besides turning settings off and back on again in plex. What seems to be “working” is having it set for remote access, it’s complaining about “Not available outside your network” under remote access. and relay is enabled in network.
This is how I had it earlier when I first posted. I haven’t made any network/firewall changes. The only other thing that I think it could be is I told it to use IPv4 only client in network while trying to fix it. (it was set to IPv4 and IPv6)
