I’ve tried multiple ways. Scans turned off, trash can set to not empty, leave original library folders and add new ones. I can’t tell if Plex is smart enough to recognize the files in the new library do not need to be refreshed, just the metadata needs to be reused.
Either way, the most time consuming part of “detecting intros” is rerun, even though the metadata is still in Plex storage.
If you follow the process here, most of your media should be associated with the existing data. You will know that it worked properly if, after copying the media, adding the new location to your library, and scanning, your episodes show up with duplicates. Just be careful to follow the steps precisely, particularly the step of copying the media to the new location, not moving it.
If any shows don’t show up as duplicates (due to matching errors) you can match/fix match on and then merge with the existing show. After you’re satisfied that everything has been detected properly and is using the existing metadata, you can remove the original media directory(ies) from your library.
If you still have issues, you may want to check out this thread. However, it requires manual database modification:
First, that process does not apply to what I am doing. I am not replacing a drive with a larger drive. I have my server pointed at a Synology NAS, and I’ve discovered thru trial and error that " Run a partial scan when changes are detected" works better when accessing the NAS via UNC path. I had switched all my libraries to accessing thru mapped drives, but was having to force scans to get new material to show up.
So, yesterday I added the UNC paths to the TV Shows library. I went thru all the steps on a few postings I found, and in a reasonable amount of time all my series where accessible via Plex with just the UNC paths. All the watched flags also were assigned correctly.
The issue is that “Detecting intros:” started running and scanning all my TV Shows. It is detecting intros on shows I have watched recently, which should already have been detected. I figure at the rate it’s detecting it will take several days to complete… and redo all the detecting that it had already done once. I am so glad I did not lose my “watched” status. Not to happy about all this detecting… which I would have thought would not be necessary to do again.
I would also like to see a similar options. Sometimes I would upgrade my TV episodes from to my Blu-ray copy from a TV copy and the intro detection becomes a little off so I would love to see a way to force or redo the intro detection to fix this.
