Remote access and the VPN

Back when I first set up my remote access, it kept dropping out. I solved that by getting a static IP address. I understood at the time that I couldn’t run it through a VPN and expect remote access to work. Lately, however, I’ve noticed that the remote seems to be working whether I have VPN engaged or not. Today I noticed that one of my friends was watching something remotely while my VPN was on. When I looked at the dashboard, there was a red exclamation point next to the show she was watching. Hovering over it, it said, “Indirect.” When I turned the VPN off, it took a few minutes but the exclamation point turned to a green lock icon that said “Secure” when hovered over. Can anyone explain what’s going on here?

When the VPN is active, remote connections are using Plex Relay.

The stream is tunneled through servers at plex.tv and limited to 2 Mbps.

In the Plex Dashboard → Now Watching + Expanded View, relay connections are displayed as Indirect. The stream may also be transcoding due to the bandwidth limitation.
