Remote Access: Is it better with a Plex Pass?

I have no problems turning on the “Remote Access” feature as long as my VPN is turned off… that said, Will the content that I watch remotely be the same quality as if I watched it at home? Is the quality better remotely if I have a Plex Pass?

I’m asking because while the feature seems to click on with no errors I’ve not used it remotely. I will be traveling and I’d like to have full access of my library while I’m out of town. That’s why I was wondering if the Plex Pass offered any benefits to make it work more smoothly.

I probably will take an Apple TV with me and try and access the server that way. I should be able to plug in the apple tv… sign into my account, and reach my content at home right? Do I need to know anything else to make this work. I’d rather do this than drag a drive with a zillion movies on it that I have to screen share from my notebook to a TV.

Thanks for your help and advice.

If you are able to activate remote access in the regular way, then all should be good in general.

A Plex pass has for remote access one small advantage: it raises the bandwidth limit of a relay connection from 1 Mbps to 2 Mbps.

Normally you won’t be needing a relay connection if your server is available regularly.

However depending on the network, to which you are connecting your Plex client, there may be situations where you have no choice than to fall back to relay (DNS related, mostly).

I advise you to test the remote connection before you depart. Install the mobile Plex app onto your phone or tablet and try it while out of the house.
(These mobile apps are limited to 1 minute play time, unless they are either bought for a one-off fee
or
they are connected to a Plex account with a Plex pass. But this should be enough to perform the test.)

Thank you not only Lightening Fast response. I will definitely do a few test runs.

I read the article in the link you provided. It explained what “Relay” was but not really a step by step of making the setting changes to accomplish using that method… or am I missing something and not fully understanding?

Also I would want to access this via Apple TV Plex app when I’m away from home. At home in that app it says Remote Access is only available with a Plex Pass. I have no problem signing up for that if I can get this to work. Are there other steps I need to consider to make this work?

Again, thanks for the help. We LOVE our Plex app and use it all the time.

There are no special steps to perform. It is activated, as long as you don’t disable ‘Remote Access’ and ‘Secure Connections’.

That’s not true. I’d like to see a screenshot of that message.

You are 100% correct. I went into the Apple TV Plex app settings and couldn’t find the setting that said you needed a “Pass” for remote access. I would have sworn it was in there. Now there was just an update to that app, maybe it changed? I don’t think I dreamt it… but I can’t find it anymore none the less.

Remote access hasn’t been restricted to Plex pass for years.
It was free, long before the ATV 4 even existed.
So it’s rather unlikely.

You might have read it somewhere out on the internet, where it’s still often wrongly reported.
