Plex Remote access enabled - is Remote Pass needed

Server Version#: 1.42.2.10156
Player Version#: 2025.31.1 (966828619) - Plex For Android

Hey there,

Today Plex started asking me to get a Remote Pass. I do not have any kind of Plex passes, though my server does have Remote Access enabled, and it’s showing as available. It is port forwarded, and I can access the settings etc.. via http://PUBLIC-IP:PORT while not on a VPN.

Now when I go to plex.tv it asks me to get a remote pass as soon as I try to play a video [the library shows up correctly - movies load, but as soon as I try playing, it asks me to subscribe]. When I go directly to http://PUBLIC-IP:PORT it also asks me to buy a remote pass.

The only time it doesn’t ask me to get one is when I’m connected to my VPN.

I’m not on the same network as the server is.

Were they any chances recently where Plex disabled remote streaming without a Remote Pass?

Thank you!
Rafał

Plex disabled remote access without a Plex Pass or a Remote Access pass. It doesn’t matter if you have it enabled and accessible because authentication still all runs through Plex services.

If you use VPN you are essentially not remote (you are remotely on the local LAN) so won’t be impacted in that case. That’s not always feasible.

You can either buy a remote pass or get plex pass. Here’s some details: https://support.plex.tv/articles/remote-watch-pass-overview/

If it’s just for you and you aren’t sharing your Plex with others a remote pass is likely the cheapest option while Plex Pass has more feature completeness and having a Plex Pass as server admin allows all users to access your Plex server without getting their own remote pass or plex pass.

Peruse Client says it won't play from "remote server", although the server is local for a few items which could cause your server to appear as “remote”, even though it shouldn’t be.
