Remote Access on or off!?

I have recently noticed since last upgrade (1.3.4.3285) that when I try and remote in Plex does not find the server, every time I get home I go to the settings page and see that the remote access is in red (no access) But within a few seconds of me going to the settings page the access will turn green and I can access the server remotely, this is happening at all times now.

same thing is happening to me. Funny thing is I’m actually accessing it remotely when it says remote access doesn’t work. It’s not indirect, either.

First step is to check your router settings. You may have a firewall in your router that is not properly configured. You should also setup a port forwarding rule in your router for Plex. It needs to forward port 32400 to your server machine’s IP address using the TCP protocol.

If you add the rule, you also need to go to Plex settings->server->remote access->show advanced and then enable ‘Manually specify port’ set it to 32400 and then click on retry. When it succeeds, then make sure you click on ‘save changes’.

If that does not help, you may need to contact your ISP and tell them what is happening. They may have blocked access to Plex in some way.

Do not forget to check the firewalls on a PC/Mac/Linux machine or on your NAS.

Nice thought but I don’t think you have read the issue correctly, the issue has nothing to do with the router, which is setup correctly in line with the requirements and has been working for ever Until the recent upgrade, the issue is that the servers remote access will Only go enabled (all by itself) if I go to the settings page locally, it does this all on its own without my intervention on the page. I can then get full remote access. it would appear that once I close the settings page the remote access goes back to unconnected or a disabled state and I no longer have remote access. I tried inputting the port manually and saving but it made no difference.

May I also ask you collect DEBUG-level logs (not Verbose), set before you start anything serious, so we can see what is happening? If the server is otherwise idle, we will see the disconnect & reconnect in the logs very easily. With these date/time stamps, we can trace them back to their counterparts at plex.tv and see if anything shows there but usually most of the logging is on your end.

Will set this up and report back…

Where are you when this is happening? I see similar behavior on my setup but I’ve narrowed it down to when I’m at work and I’m on the guest wifi. It won’t let me connect with a secure connection. If I toggle off the wifi and use my mobile data, it connects fine.

At, work, but it usually works from there, will try from my mobile data and let you know. Strange thing is when I first go into the settings for remote access (at home) it shows the remote access as unavailable then after a few seconds changes to available.

Head’s up.

I’ve replicated it. I checked with another team member who can also replicate.

He will confirm my findings when we wakes (he’s in England)

@chuckPA That’s great news, if only to prove I am not going crazy just yet at this stage of my life haha, do you want me to still collect Debug Logs?

@johnny15 Tried this just now, it would appear you are correct, I can connect via my phone data and laptop but not from my work station (now) maybe they blocked it somehow, thought this connection acted like a VPN though, I can still get into the front end but no database is found?

I would like to add that I am having this problem also since the last update. QNAP running the server. Reboot box, show connected, then it is disconnected. Driving me nuts.

[edit] Would like to add that I got it to work again by forcing a log out of my plex account and then relogging in with normal credentials. That is the only change. It is though my account data isnt persistent for this feature. I will continue to monitor it and feed back [/edit]

What you describe is exactly the behavior I see as well. You are correct because it used to work for me without issues but I know there have been significant changes at my employer as it relates to how they are handling wifi access.

Strange this is @ChuckPA has duplicated the momentary “disabled access” in Plex Web. I wonder if it’s more of a behavior where it’s just rechecking the access since you’re hitting the server settings? Who knows…but I am watching this thread to see what comes of it.

I am working with another team member to identify all cases with remote access problems.

We would like the following from each affected person. Please do this in precisely the order stated here.

WITH THE SERVER COMPLETELY IDLE (No streaming)

  1. Settings - Server - Remote Access - Disable remote access
  2. Settings - Server - General - Verbose Logging
  3. Settings - Server - General - Save Settings
  4. Settings - Server - Remote Access - Enable
  5. Observe it turn Green and return to Red OR attempt and then fail
  6. Screenshot this condition. Obfuscate (scratch out) your public IP
  7. Settings - Server - Help - Download Logs
  8. Settings - Server - General - UNcheck Verbose Logging
  9. Settings - Server - General - Save Settings

I forgot to say…

Attach your logs please

I am having the same issue…attaching screenshot and logs.

Thank you.

here are my screenshots and logs. thx in advance.
It happens the same way when I use no manual port. Only difference. No green status, stays red.

Would you mind repeating the process please? Please augment:

  1. allow more time after you enable verbose,
  2. add ‘disable remote access’ even if not enabled. (forces a ‘disconnected’ state)
  3. wait 10 seconds
  4. Click Enable
  5. wait 15 seconds after failure
  6. Now proceed with removing “Verbose” logging.

Thank you. You captured it.

I would like to suggest you “Optimize Database” . It will help your overall performance.

my DB was really big (AFAIK 300 MB). I deleted some musik staff (approx 100.000 musik tracks) which is not really needed on Plex. Optimized also. Thx for the hin.
