I have an ubuntu server (22.04.3) that is running a Plex server and various downloading software. I’d like to have a VPN running to protect me, however when I do this, remote access becomes unavailable in Plex.
Is there a way I can configure Plex/certain ports to bypass OpenVPN completely, or is there a different way to resolve this issue?
I wish to second this. I am however using Plex in Windows. There is a really specific order of things that has to occur to make things work right.
Plex MUST start before any VPN software and it must be given a good 10 seconds or so to latch onto the network card. Once done, you can then start the VPN and Plex will stay on the interface it should. If however the VPN starts first then Plex will latch onto the VPN interface and will not let it go. The only option then is to shut down both Plex and the VPN and start them back up in the right order. It is difficult to automate any of this as well since Plex will not run as a service unlike the VPN.
This is even further frustrated by the fact that there is in fact an option in Settings > Networks > Preferred Network Interface which lets you select the interface to be used, but it seems this interface selection is ONLY used when Plex is communicating with local clients and not as part of the remote address selection.
Many apps these days have a method to only use the desired network interface, why is this so difficult for Plex? Plex Support, please look into this and find us a better process by which we can make this all work with ease.
