VPN Private Internet Access issues with Plex

Good evening, I am having issues with my plex working with my VPN. It is PIA (private internet access), and was chosen because of its support from plex, noted through forums and support sites, even stating that it is used in your offices. While I have my VPN active, i cannot use any of my settings, it keeps a loading screen before timing out. This affects my remote access for other users as well, meaning I can stream outside of my home while having the vpn active. Any help or insight into this issue would be incredible. Thank you

I would love some help with this also. This worked perfectly without issue until I was forced to upgrade plex and now it never works.

Are you using version 1.7 of PIA app

Yes, I am.

Ok have you made a application exemption, for Plex Media server.

PIA Setting/Network

That defeats the purpose of a VPN…

It limits whats is in the tunnel only, if you wish to run Plex through the tunnel there are other solutions available I believe. But involve some advance set up, I’m happy with https connections with Plex. All it means I can have the VPN on all the time without it causing remote issues.

That allows PLEX to bypass the tunnel and flow “with” open web traffic.

So, what the issue, what are you worried about. If it’s Photos, home videos that makes sense. I do not share those with this medium.

Honestly it is none of your business.

In a thread about getting PLEX to operate over a VPN, like it always has but has suddenly stopped, your answer is to STOP using a VPN (through bypassing it). That is unhelpful and unnecessary commentary.

Never asked exactly, never want to know. Your business is yours so advertise it so.
You approached me not the other way around.

VPN Private Internet Access issues with Plex, is OP’s title Access the key word.

So something to hide, I don’t care.

I replied to your comment so other inexperienced users would not think your advice would solve their problem. I did not I tend to start a conversation with you because you were wrong.

Next time just let it be when you are given the choice to be misleading or stay quiet.

Were was i wrong, the Title of discussion is access with a VPN. You assume far too much

just dont use a vpn known for hosting large amounts of bots / scanners / etc or configure manual access?

I use PIA and have configured a custom domain which is used and don’t have any issues.I am perfectly fine with plex blocking streaming etc as long as we can still auth.

edit: or use split vpn.

Good to know, thankyou.

I think you’re getting confused. There’s no need to set up a VPN to securely connect to your Plex media. I recommend you review this support article.

https://support.plex.tv/articles/206225077-how-to-use-secure-server-connections/

Basically, a VPN is not required within the Plex ecosystem. So why have one? A VPN is useful outside of this ecosystem. There are at least four reasons you might want to use a VPN. You might find the following article useful.

A VPN is necessary to encrypt and safeguard my network.

Secure connections aren’t even the primary reason I use a commercial VPN.

PLEX should work regardless of this need. There is no reason to discontinue support for this feature without addressing customers.

Reading through this thread, some are advocating you can leave Plex out of the VPN tunnel (it doesn’t need to be in there), or, as SE56 rightly pointed out, you can leave it in (why would you bother?). All bases are covered. What exactly has been discontinued?

All of my Network Traffic needs to be routed through my VPN. Making an exception for PLEX (as you recommend) and allowing it onto the internet with no end to end encryption is not an acceptable solution.

PLEX, as of recent updates, can no longer remotely connect if using a VPN. So you can not leave it in.

SE56 is wrong.
