Remote access with CGNAT, VPN, Dedicated IP and Port Forward

Server Version#: Version 1.22.3.4392
Running on Ubuntu 20.04

I have 4G LTE ISP (tmobile and att) because nothing else is available which puts me behind a CGNAT. With nothing added i cant access any ports on my home server from outside.

I have an Ubiquiti USG running latest firmware and it load balances between the two isp mentioned above.

I subscribed to PureVPN which gave me a dedicated IP via PPTP and i used their portforward to open up 32400.

Above are the settings for server and the gateway as well as a port check. I have been messing with the settings for two days now and can’t figure out what the issue is. Any help greatly appreciated.

You’ve configured your port forward rule to use 32400 as the external port, but you’ve configured Plex to use 13269. These need to be the same value.

I’d recommend configuring Plex to use 32400 since canyouseeme already shows that your port forward is working. Change the value in Plex and then click “Retry.”

Also, the protocol for your port forward rule only needs to be TCP; it likely won’t hurt anything to leave it as both, but as a general rule you only want forward what is actually needed.

well the recommendation worked! but when im connected to purevpn my upload goes from 30mbps to 1mbps and so far their support has not been able to help me fix this. likely i will cancel and get a refund for the service. at 1mbps upload my server is unusable.

i ran across an article that claims that ngrok might help me bypass my CGNAT, any thoughts on that ? how would that work for the plex apps on android ?

I’m sorry, but I’ve not had any personal experience in using remote proxying solutions with Plex.

I have finally managed to find the workaround for the CGNAT.

I ended up changing my subscription with pure VPN to dedicated IP and port forwarding and I got the dedicated IP from Germany this keeps nearly 100% of my bandwidth available when connected to the VPN.

Aside from the VPN I found it zero tier also works if you are watching via a browser from your remote location. Ngrok works but is bandwidth limited and streaming quality suffers, thus no better than the Plex relay.

I also have a similar problem with CGNAT with my ASUS DSL-AC68u modem, can anyone help me with pro forwarding please. My message says the same as above.

I have been given a public ip address and a static ip, but don’t know where to go from there.

That means you are not battling with CGNAT anymore. Lucky you!

All you need to do is to create a manual port forwarding in your router.
Then tell Plex which public IP address you have and which port number from the outside (i.e. “external” port number) is used.

Thanks for your help, all up and running… Plex just found the public IP without me have to do anything as soon as it was assigned by the provider… I appreciate your help.
