Port forwarding

I am having trouble trying to engage remote access. When trying to setup port forwarding I changed all ports to default (32400) turned all firewalls off but still not able to connect. It appears to engage for a second than quickly turns off again. I don’t think I’m in a double nat scenario since I only have one router, but I do have an Ethernet switch box. I have read the troubleshoot info Plex provides but did not help. I have the Arris tvg589 router/modem combo from ATT. I’m completely lost.

A few things to look at…
You’ve set Plex correctly I would assume. Settings > Server > Remote Access > Checked the box for Manually specify public port
For your router to work properly, you should look at two things. Manually assigning an IP Address to your server and Port forwarding.
If you Google “Arris tvg589 port forwarding” you might find some instructions about how to get the job done.
Once you’ve made sure all of the settings are set up how they’re supposed to be, I would turn everything including the router off and on again. For some reason my old router wouldn’t bind the connection without a restart. After that, it took a few minutes to see the port and lock it down.

Also Google:
arris router port forwarding not working

Some interesting, and disturbing, links come up in that search - which is probably associated with this remote thing not working.

It’s also possible for your ISP to have you on a double nat - the only way to cure that is to call them up and ■■■■■ about it for a while (arbitrary time limit).

Also note that if/when you get the port forwarded correctly and restart everything - it can take a few minutes (arbitrary time limit) for Plex.tv to realize what’s happened and report a successful hook up.

Thanks , that’s what happened. I disconnected the router for about a minute plugged it back in - presto, all seemed well. But after about 30 minutes or so it returned back to being disabled. Any advice would be appreciated.

Some ISP’s also are using CGNAT (100.64.x.x)

CGNAT disrupts PMS by creating a double-NAT architecture. The solution in CGNAT environments is to ask for (likely subscribe) a public-facing real IP address at the WAN port of the modem

I have to ask my ISP for a public IP address? Do they charge extra for this? And what is the exact verbiage I need to use to ensure I get what I want?

ISPs sneak that in - usually without warning - when they start running out of public IP addresses. If it creates an issue - and it will for Plex - the normal procedure is to call them up and ■■■■■ about it for a while, then they usually just take you off whatever they put you on so your Plex works again.

Of course, there’s always the possibility your ISP is going to be a d**k about it… you can cross that bridge when you come to it.

I believe @ChuckPA has provided the necessary verbiage above - in the hopes your ISP will know how that stuff works, even if we don’t.

lol

You want a Public-facing IPv4 address on your modem's WAN port. You cannot use the CGNAT address they have issued you.

What reasoning shall i give for wanting my own public IP address, and to be removed from the CGNAT?

It’s F****ng up your Plexiverse?
They can fix it or you can find another ISP that will?
(usually, they’re pretty good about doing stuff that’ll keep your money rolling in)

I think you first have to find out if you are on a CGNAT. @ChuckPA ?

Check the WAN IP of the modem.

Again, If it is in the 100.64.x.x range as defined https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier-grade_NAT then Remote Access is not possible. You will never have Remote Access because your server does not have the authority to create a port forwarding rule in their routers (UPNP / NAPPMP)

Will having my VPN affect the forwarding?

Yes. Profoundly.

You must make certain all traffic is routed through the VPN.
The difficulty you face is starting the VPN before PMS starts and signs in to plex.tv

Once it signs in to plex.tv, your reported IP address does not match your realized IP address (the VPN exit addr)

Gotcha, so if I know I’m using remote access on a particular day I need to leave the VPN off?

You leave it off OR you establish Remote Access after you start the VPN

i hope dvr and live tv won’t be this difficult to setup

It’s not. I purchased a HDHomeRun Prime , connected it up, assigned it an IP on my lan (I like devices at known IP addresses), and told Plex go to look for it.

Channel scan isn’t the quickest thing (PMS waits for the tuner to learn).
EPG download takes time. I have 25 Mbps down and it took 15-20 minutes to complete. for my small lineup (about 100 channels)
