Remote acess works but icon says not accessible

Server Version#: 1.16.6.1592
Player Version#: not relevant

My remote access is fine, has been since I set it up, but in recent version updates (probably two or three back and through now) the remote access icon shows inaccessible WHILE I’M CLEARLY ABLE TO REMOTE ACCESS.

It’s weird. It’s not the yellow “hey, you’re not directly connecting but we can still make it work”, it’s the red “You cannot connect to this network from outside” while I’m, like, testing it on my phone on data or at work.

I am having the same exact issue with remote access. The server is only accessible indirectly outside of my home network. I have forwarded and re-forwarded the proper ports and nothing changes. It stays green for about 5-10 seconds then immediately switches back red. No firewall or virus protection either.

Ok I fixed my issue. I am not sure if this will work for you but here goes…I have an AT&T Pace PLC router which means there is no Upnp option or anything, ports must be manually forwarded. In the firewall options you can either select a device or manually enter the IP of the device plex is installed on yourself (make sure your server IP is static). I was selecting my device via the router but apparently this is not the same thing as manually entering the ip address. Once I entered the IP, and then forwarded the ports like normal remote access came back online. I hope this helps, if it does not give me the specs of your setup as in the type of router you are using etc. We can try to figure this out.

That’s… that’s not what I said. I’m glad you fixed your problem, but my problem is that the server tells me it’s not accessible from an outside connection WHEN IT CLEARLY IS. I’m listening to music on my phone over 4G with a direct, outside connection, but the server is reporting that it’s not accessible from an outside connection.

It’s… it’s working fine, but it THINKS it isn’t. Only the little icon is borked. And I’m kinda worried that if I start messing with my port forwarding I’ll break the remote access while trying to fix the stupid icon.

I don’t have any solutions, but I’m seeing a very similar thing with my plex installation. I’m in the UK and my ISP is Sky. I’ve got plex installed on an Ubuntu box and the remote access tab tells me my server is not accessible from outside my network… but it is… When I access plex from my phone, on a completely different network, or even over 4g, I can access everything fine, but most of the time I have to refresh the (for example) movies view first. Everything will initially have the “Offline” badge next to it, but when I refresh, everything’s fine and it all works.

I wouldn’t mind if it didn’t do the initial “Offline” bit because it clearly works, but if I tell people they can connect from outside my network, the less savvy of them will see “Offline” and start moaning, without trying to actually access the content.

It doesn’t matter if I forward a port or not (except that if I forward the port I have to do the “Manually specify public port” thing), I get the same experience either way.

I’d love to know what the issue is, and if there’s a way to make everything tell the same story. I wondered if it might have something to do with SSL since although I can use the app on my phone fine, if I try to access the plex server with my browser (using myip:32400/web) I get a “not secure” message and can’t get any further, but that’s just a wild guess.

Glad to see it’s not just me, sorry if’s affecting you, too. I’m in the US, with Comcast, and basically the same thing happens to me; when I first open up Plex remotely everything is offline and I get the space dog, but tag retry once and it finds everything just fine. I do have my server set to ‘preferred’ instead of required, so I don’t think that’s a factor.

Yes! This is driving me nuts! After YEARS of easy, successful streaming, this is exactly what happens to me.

I have Plex on an iMac with 32GB Ram and an i7. Has been bulletproof and stupid-simple (thankfully, as networking is not my strength).

Anyway, last year, I moved into an apartment complex with my GF while our house was being worked on. That’s when it started. I wrote it off to the weird apartment-complex internet package, where it seems everyone is all hooked up together (or something-- told you, not my strength! lol). I was using the same Netgear router I had used for years prior to the move as well.

FFW to now, in the new house. Switched over to Google Wifi from the Netgear. Works great, super strong signal, but I am still getting the red which is working beyond my expectations-- except this issue with Plex persists (Red Icon, “You cannot connect to this network from outside”). Or so I thought-- but people tell me than can and do connect! IDK what quality they are getting or how, but like the OP, I don’t want to go messing around and totally ruining it.

One thing I did try was temporarily going back to the Netgear-- no joy.

I feel like Plex must have made some changes a while back? Would love to get this resolved, but my networking knowledge gives me no confidence, short of a much more savvy user figuring it out. (Here that, savvy users? HEEEELLLP! )
