Remote Access not working: Plex Server Offline (even though it's online)

Hi Everyone

Using Plex Server Version 1.24.1.4931 on a Windows 10 machine.

I had set up Plex two months ago using Version 1.22.3.4523 and remote access worked fine. I was able to access my library and my son (set up as a friend) also was able to. I tried to access Plex yesterday from an Android Phone, an Android tablet , Mac computer and a Windows computer. I get a red button saying the the Plex Server is Offline and no access. I am able to access it locally when on the same network. I did not make any changes, except for accepting every update that was offered. I have tried signing out of both the server and client and resigning in.

In Plex Server, under remote access it says I am fully accessible outside your network. My private port is 32400, but my public port is 17409. Tried changing the public to 32400 but it didn’t do anything. When I searched on “canyouseeme.org”, using my public IP address, it can’t find port 32400, 17409, 25,80,20000,100. It doesn’t seem to be able to find any ports - it says the connection timed out. I did not set up port forwarding or anything on my routers ( I have a netgear as my main one, and an Asus one connected to it which the Plex server is connected to). Remember, everything worked fine when originally set up. Any suggestions? Should I uninstall this server version and go with that old one? Really want this fixed up before I head out on vacation in a few weeks. Thanks for reading.

then it sounds like it was using UPnP originally. If you enable and entered something in the manual port field, then it stops using UPnP and going to expect you have a port forward set up for that port you entered.

If you don’t want to set up a port forward I would remove whatever you have entered in manually specify port field and then restart your router and then server.

I’ve put everything back the way it was. Remote Access still not working.

Didn’t notice this before. Is your Asus in AP mode? Else it would cause a doubleNat. In the remote access settings does it show your real external IP?

Pretty sure it’s not AP mode (I’ve never set anything and kept everything at default). Remote access does show real external IP.
After rebooting my server and router, I’m having something else happening. After enabling remote access, it stays green for about 30 seconds then goes to red and says its not available.

Ok. It’s staying green (for about 10 minutes now) and I’m getting remote access.

Might need to see server logs but I would check that Plex is allowed in firewall.

Big Wheel

It all seems to be working now. I’m getting remote access.

ok. Still a bit strange. It might be working over relay, if it is then when playing something remotely it will say indirect in the now playing dashboard.

It disconnected again, changed from green to red under remote server, enable disable section. When its green, it’s working (which is an improvement from before), but why does it disconnect after?

probably need to see server logs but I still think there is a doubleNAT or an issue with firewall.

I’m beginning to think that as well. I will try get the log posted. Just to clarify, I have my ISP modem coming into the house in bridge mode. Then I use ethernet to connect to a Netgear Router. I then use ethernet to connect to an Asus router and then use ethernet to connect to the Windows desktop (Plex Server). Would doubleNAT be an issue if it’s all wired? Can I connect the Plex Server to the first router(the Netgear). I do not want to lose the WIFi networks I have set up in both routers. One is used for regular stuff and the other, when needed, for VPN stuff.

Left at their default settings each router would create their own separate networks. though you have the ISP modem in bridge mode to only act as a modem . in your Netgear it should show your external IP as the WAN which is fine. In the ASUS it likely list the IP the Netgear assigned it via DHCP as it’s WAN. Your computer would be on the Asus network rather than the Netgear network

Yes.

Here are the logs. I am planning on moving the server to the first router in the next few days.Plex Media Server Logs_2021-08-30_18-47-57.zip (4.4 MB)

it is a doubleNAT. it thinks the WAN IP is 192.168.1.4 which is a private/Local IP likely given to the Asus by the Netgear

thank you for that. As mentioned, I will try and move the server to the other router.

Hi Big WheelPMS Plugin Logs.zip (143.3 KB)

I have the exact same problem of the remote access dropping in and out constantly and have followed everything step by step up until this point. Can you please assist in what I’m to do now?

Edit: to add my network provider uses CGNAT and I can opt out of this function?

edit 2: I have opted out and now have bypassed this but there are still sporadic drop outs

Hello. I have a similar problem but slightly different.

Setup:
Plex server runs on TrueNAS with a static IP
The network is set up like this:
IPS modem → Router1 → Switch → Plex server
Locally I access the Plex server via Router2 which is in bridge mode.
I have set up port forwarding on Router1 (Switch is not manageable)

When I enable remote access it says it works all the time. But when trying to connect remotely via a mobile network let’s say it does not work. The Public IP is right.

  • sometimes it only displays my thumbnails
  • 2x or 3x I had watched remotely, but with limited capabilities. (another house wifi, it never worked via mobile)
  • Tried to connect the plex server directly to Router1 (no effect).

Running out of ideas. Why is the app showing that I have fully enabled remote access but it does not work? Occasionally it worked in limited capabilities.

Attached my logs. Any ideas @BigWheel ?

Thank you so much!
