Starting roughly 2-3 weeks ago all remote connections on my Plex server stopped playing smoothly at original quality. On any and all remote clients, the playback buffers every few seconds and doesn’t stop buffering. It’s almost as if it refuses to load the media ahead of where the player is. It will only run without buffering if the quality is dropped down very low (usually 144p). On local connections it runs just fine. I run the server on a Synology DS423+ with 48TB of storage, 910 Mbps down / 61 Mbps up. It has been running perfectly for almost two years. My storage was running low (29.2TB used out of 31.4TB) around the same time as this issue started occurring so I shutdown my server for a week while I purchased a new drive and it didn’t fix the issue, so now I’m stuck. I will provide any needed further details.
Watching this topic. If OP has no problem locally, I wouldn’t expect his drives to be the problem. The other suggestion is excellent, but how does one run a speedtest to a remote client?
Ok, I’ve just run the command for the docker image provided on that site and then went to NAS-IP:3000 and ran the test. Is this what I was supposed to do? I got 937.5 Mbps down / 733.1 Mbps up / 5ms ping / .2 ms jitter. Is there a way to measure packet loss?
edit: also nothing hoards the resources, the system is only used for Plex. CPU barely reaches 30-40% under 4-5 transcodes. I also have around 18TB free of storage.
I see. I will have to figure out how to do that. The only remote connection I have is my cellular data, could I have a friend measure their connection to the server?
I have other threads open on other forums for this issue and some people have said that it could be packet loss. I have measured anywhere from 0.5% to 2.5% packet loss using an Ookla speedtest image, but I can’t confirm if it’s the cause of the issue because I don’t know how to fix that. I also don’t know why I would suddenly have packet loss. I tested and swapped out all the hardware I could except for the main ethernet cable that runs from the router to a switch. I can confirm though that my ports are forwarded correctly, I have checked with canyouseeme and I disabled Plex relay when I first had similar issues about a year ago.
Are you talking about streaming Plex from my cell on mobile data? Because yes there are problems. Any Plex connection that isn’t the local connection of the NAS has the issue. I don’t know what MTR is, so I’ll have to look that up along with how to measure the remote connection speed to the server.
I am direct playing, I know the difference between both and it doesn’t matter which I do because as long as it’s a remote connection it has the issue. Also the DS423+ CPU has hardware transcoding and it does it rather well. I have tried many many different remote clients (all my members complained endlessly).
I can’t spend anymore time on this today, so I’ll have to try tmw. Thank you for all your help thus far.
Hey, sorry it’s been a while so no pressure to continue helping me, I got caught up in some things and couldn’t run the tests till recently. I asked two remote users to test their connection to my NAS. One user on ethernet with 441 down / 11 up internet got 5 down / 12 up with 63ms ping to my NAS. The other user on wifi with 137 down / 22 up internet got 7 down / 21 up with 39ms ping to my NAS. Any thoughts? I’m calling Verizon tomorrow because I looked through some old threads and saw someone mention that the ISP could be doing traffic shaping. No pressure to respond. All values in Mbps.
