I have been using Plex for years and have only just started having issues this past week or two. My dad is trying to play back various files from his home and keeps running into buffering issues when he plays at original quality or buffering when he sets it to automatic.
Our setups are as follows:
Me (server)
ISP upload speed max - 21mbps
Plex - no quality or streaming limits set.
Dad (client Shield TV)
ISP download speed max - 40mpbs
Plex - tried both original (max) and automatic streaming settings
A test file he tries to play has a bitrate of approx 9mbps and is 1080p quality so in theory it should direct play with no problems. In practice it buffers on original quality setting and it transcodes down to speeds below 3mbps when he sets it to automatic.
He has tried lower quality files and some play with no problem and others run into the same issues.
It is clear to me that Plex seems to think that either me or my dads connection is not fast enough to cope with the file at the original quality. This is backed up when I look at log file with lines such as:
DEBUG - Streaming Resource: Estimated bandwidth for 92913265-4CD8-457C-8D6F-6CDD564E83B8 to be 2557kbps over 6.05s
Now I know my connection is fast enough and so is my dads. I have done numerous speed tests on my dads client and my server both show the speeds I quoted before which are plenty fast enough. I have also checked that nobody else is using any bandwidth at the time.
Anyone else know what could be causing the problem?
I have uploaded my log files showing some tests I carried out with settings at both original and automatic qualities on the client.
