Removal of Free EPG service - Not Happy

here’s a quick guide on how to get started with the shepherd docker container under windows. basically the instructions from hub.docker apply, just a matter of changing the paths a bit.
Install docker for windows.zip (177.2 KB)

I have a HD Homerun DVR subscription. It’s very cheap, so I currently use that for my recordings, then add the recordings folder as a video source to plex. I find the recordings more reliable than Plex anyway. I won’t be renewing my subscription next year.

Thanks for the write-up Jani. Appreciate the effort you put in. I have got it working.

Installed it and have an output file that looks right, I just don’t want to point Plex at it just yet because I’m going on a work trip for a few days and don’t want to leave my partner (who is technologically challenged  ) without a working system. Will try it out as soon as I return.

Great work Jani, if you are anywhere near Newcastle I’d like to buy you a beer.

Jani. One last question about shepherd - can you inserted channel icons into the Plex guide?

I’m not sure, the icon download was all set up to add them to the MythTV database somehow. I’ll take a look at the code and try to work out what it was doing.
https://www.yourtv.com.au/ seems to have a good selection of icons all in one place if one were to borrow them

@jani.talikka https://github.com/ShephedProject/shepherd/wiki/channel_icons ?

Looks like all the yourtv links are working: https://github.com/ShephedProject/shepherd/blob/master/logo_list.txt

Edit: ah right, MythTV specific, good luck!

For the posters on this thread telling other Plex subscribers, especially those who took out a lifetime subscription, that they have no right to expect a working TV service to be part of their subscription, are you able to rationalise this page away:
https://www.plex.tv/tv/
The TV service is only available via subscription, people have a right to be upset and expect a refund if the service is pulled. Useless without a TV Guide. The comparison to Google being delivered via an ISP is poor, Plex have specifically pulled in a lot of Media Centre users by advertising the TV service so heavily.
Maybe removing the DVR from the subscription model might help to resolve the problem in countries that are not being supplied with a Guide? Or maybe remove the DVR from the subscription model totally so you can use it with your own guide, but you have to subscribe if you want to use the Plex supplied Guide? And give a partial refund to lifetime subscribers in affected countries.

I can get yourtv.com.au channel icon in the guide by manually adding a line under each channel name in the XMLTV file. Don’t know how to do it automatically though.

eg.
channel id=“9go!.free.au”>
display-name lang=“en”>GO!/display-name>
icon src=" http://contentserver.com.au/assets/270213_go.gif "/>
/channel>

I wonder for us users in the US what they are going to use instead of Gracenote?

I will take a look next chance I get and maybe submit a patch to shepherd.

If you do that I’m assuming we will all need to update?

Might be time to start a new topic just for Shepherd

Wanted to add my voice that this change is absolute crap.

Plex should figure out how to source the data on our behalf since this is an unacceptable outcome.

I don’t usually say much on the Plex forms as Plex never responds to anything you say. But just wanted to voice my opinion. I do understand where everyone’s coming from with the guide changes coming up. But if these guide changes actually give us better features like favorite channels, sorting channels, and more I’m all for it. For people losing the guide I’m not familiar with the other products out there but emby is always an option:).

What a choice post… "If it gives us users a better experience at your expense I’m happy. Just go use something else. "

Fyi I use emby for live tv lol

Congratulations. Seems like the people in this thread paid to use Plex as their DVR though.

Removing functionality is unacceptable. Right now I can setup a DVR’s, using an alternate EPG XMLTV data stream. Because I can at no cost. But it means ongoing maintenance and monitoring that I paid not to have to do.

However, if they remove that functionality altogether then that is a more significant issue.

IceTV is not an option for many - either they’ve been burned before by that particular company, they just don’t want to pay again for a service that Plex provided, or they just don’t want to pay for another service.

Essentially, right now we’re subsidising other users functionality. They’ve removed functionality we used to have, and are using that funding to benefit other users.

So like all of us here, this change is incredibly disappointing and Plex’s official response is plain pathetic. I’ve written the below email to Accounts/Billing (link provided because finding it is a challenge), and hopefully others can use it. I based my email on these two cases, specifically this line:

The Australian Consumer Law applies to all businesses that engage in trade and commerce with Australian consumers, including the supply of digital goods such as games.

Here’s what I wrote:

Hello, I wish to contact you regarding the changes to Plex Pass EPG data in Australia.

I am incredibly disappointed to learn that the EPG data will no longer be in Australia, and frustrated that the latest Plex Media Server update physically removes DVR support. I did not receive any email from you about this; I discovered the changes only AFTER I lost my DVR.

I purchased a Lifetime Plex Pass, in part, for the DVR and EPG feature.

I note that your website (https://www.plex.tv/tv/) states that “Our easy-to-use program guide and powerful search let you find, watch, and record your local movies, shows, news, and sports”.

Additionally, the Plex Pass page (https://www.plex.tv/plex-pass/) under “Features” states:
Watch live broadcast TV directly on your device (in HD where available). A Plex Pass, antenna, and tuner, are all you need to stream free OTA live TV.

Nowhere on these pages does it state that an additional program guide provider is required in order to make use of the DVR/Live TV feature.

Further, I note that your Employee DaveBinM stated on 1 April:
“The free EPG in Australia will continue to be provided, and is not going away. Only a few countries will be losing the guide when Plex changes their metadata provider for the EPG in June 2019.” ~ Removal of Free EPG service - Not Happy - #2 by DaveBinM

DaveBinM again restated on 2 April: “It’s possible you received that email in error, however, I can assure you that the guide for Australia will remain.” ~ Removal of Free EPG service - Not Happy - #4 by DaveBinM

The fact that

  1. Plex sold me a Lifetime Plex Pass based on the above features being provided
  2. Have retroactively taken away those features I have paid for
  3. Continue to advertise as if those features still exist
  4. Told customers that we would continue to have a free EPG
  5. Do not have the ability to access the free EPG
In my beliefs counts as false and misleading conduct, and is something that is covered by Australia’s Fair Trading and Consumer Law.

I would therefore request a partial refund of the Lifetime Plex Pass I paid for ($119.99 AUD) which reflects the cost of the IceTV subscription you are advising me to take up at a cost of $36 AUD/year.

Otherwise, I will be left with no choice but to contact Fair Trading and/or request a credit card chargeback.

Hey Shaun, Any response on your letter?
I paid $159AUD mainly because of the liveTV option and I wanted to support a good product… Frankly I was pretty happy with the Free Plex offering as I had a STB at the time. Not too sure how to proceed with this now, maybe not so good of a product:(

Agree this is not acceptable, the only reason I found out about the change was when I sat down to watch a show, it didn’t record. Removing entire countries from having a basic level of support, just to allow new features (and to be honest I’m not sure what innovation in an EPG is really that important) isn’t acceptable. Just like the HDHomeRun app, why can’t Plex at least take the EPG information that is available via broadcast, or other sources that still remain available. This is not good enough Plex, just like the sync feature of your product, that is the only other feature that made me purchase a lifetime subscription at almost $150 here in Australia.
