Is it possible to rename the audio tracks for a movie? If I've got the main audio and a director's commentary, right now both audio tracks are labeled "English (AAC Stereo)"
I'd like to give each track a more descriptive name if possible.

Looking at the XML data, there seems to be a "title" field for each audio track. Could that be used for descriptions? I suppose the various audio select functions would have to then pay attention to that - if they don't already.
I would try editing that data by hand to test it out - but I have no idea where that information lives on disk.
It would ideally be quite difficult for plex to read an audio track of a movie and identify a similarly named audio track and then differentiate between the two. If each audio track is specifically/differently named in the movie file itself, would be a different case.
I did, before posting, try to rename an audio track in a movie using a free mac app called Subler. It would be worth a shot to change the name of the audio track(s) in the movie file itself and see if plex interprets it by the name you set!

Well, I looked at this program and MetaZ and neither one of them would let me edit the name of the audio. :(

Don't use the drop down, double click "English" for example and the cursor will let you select the language and then you can rename it! Let me know if you'd like a screenshot [emoji6]

for mkv files you can use mkvtoolnix
however plex does not read those stream Names and does not display them in any of the apps. it only reads the language Tag

Thanks iShow, when I tried changing the name as soon as I saved it , it switched my new title to "unknown".
That came through plex and I could see it as "unknown". I suppose I could just change it to an consistent foreign language and just know what to look for.

Sorry this is a current limitation. There have been several requests to see this implemented.

+1 for the ability of plex to read the Track name. I really want to include all my audio tracks i have people watching movies in multiple languages and also those who want to hear the directors commentary. Sure would be nice if they could actually tell what track they are picking.
@Orionshock I assume that re-naming our audio tracks, either in plex’s metadata or in the .mkv files themselves so that plex can read them, is still not possible at this time? Can you direct us to the Feature Requests for this? It’s quite annoying to have English, Directory’s Commentary, and Guest Commentary audio files from a blu-ray, and they all just show up as “[Language] [codec] [number of channels]” - with no way to change them.
I’d love to request this feature, as those of us who actually use Plex “legally” - i.e. ripping our own purchased blu-rays and all their Extra Content - are left with no good way to manage that extra content :(.
(Note that I’m in no way disparaging those who use plex for content acquired elsewhere on the internet. but I’m just saying that the extra content that often is left out of those “less-than-legal” acquired content, is the stuff that those of us with our own blu-rays aren’t able to manage!)
@Orionshock; I am in the same position as @sha256 where i want to include the director’s commentary from my dvd rips, but cannot distinguish between the normal “English (AAC Stereo)” audio track, and commentary “English (AAC Stereo)” audio track.
I am fairly new to the Plex community and for whatever reason cannot access the Feature Requests you linked above, but I would like to officially support this request. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help get this functionality roadmapped.

It’s because you’re not paying for a Plex Pass. Only plex pass people can make feature requests/vote on features. It’s how plex gets you to start paying, heh…

Here’s the funning thing. Not having the ability to read audio track names (I’ve been renaming them using Subler for a while now as iTunes/AppleTV reads them) is a bit of a sticking point with me. I do not pay for Plex pass as I keep on finding issues with the system (lack of chapters on Samsung TVs for instance) that make me feel the system is not that polished.
This lack of audio track naming and the fact that it is still not available after three years only makes we not want to subscribe even more. If I paid to put in the feature request and have it sit there for years and not be done I’d be mighty annoyed.
FWIW there are a number of other threads requesting this – Plex already reads the titles of audio and subtitle tracks (which are dead easy to edit with MKVToolNix GUI!) but does not currently show them on most clients. You have to check the “Get Info” section on the web. (If any devs actually read these things I do have Plex Pass…)
Just came across this old thread, and in case it helps anyone else, even though I am a PLEX PASS member, as I rip all of my movies I own, I encode them from .mkv to .mp4 in handbrake, and in so doing, I change the audio tracks. I like to have commentaries and such also, so the workaround I personally use, is for all main movie audio tracks, I use the AAC format, but for commentaries, I change them to AC3. While this is not a perfect solution, especially when you have multiple languages, it at least lets me differentiate at a glance between movie audio, and commentary audio. Hope this helps someone.
