Renaming Friends?

I’ve been at a loss since Plex started to automatically rename Plex users from email address to a user name. I invite friends by email, but once they connect their account name is sometimes completely different – leaving me unable to remember who is who in my friends list.

Is there any logic to this? I would think there would be more ability to manage the friends list. Adding an alias at least. During Covid I added a few co-workers and friends due to the lock-downs and shelter in place… but now I have no idea who these people are based on their user names versus their email address.

Am I missing something here? Or is there a plan to enhance this in the near future so we know who is connecting to our server?

D

Each of your friends can change their own account username, which will change how they appear to you. But there’s no way for you to change their username.

Yeah, I knew they could change… But seems like a very flawed implementation where we need to reach out and request them to change their user name so it properly shows up on our end.

wondering if any plans to correct. was happy with email addresses – could easily figure out who was who with that. Now, no clue. Have turned off friends more than once trying to remove a specific person and got the wrong one in error.

And to add… even though yes, I could try and ask them to change – at this point I’ve lost their email address. So unless I had it elsewhere, I have no way to contact them to even request that change. Or who do I contact? User kkkelel? But I don’t know who that is – so don’t know what email address to even contact them.

So yes, while it is possible for the end user to change their name… the change plex implemented removes our ability to contact them.

I love plex, but really hate this flawed implementation.

Some friends you’ve got there…

You might want to add your vote/voice to this feature request:

I think this came up before. At the very least, it should be possible to see your “friend’s” emails used to invite. That information should still be in the server somewhere.

Does anyone remember? Did they use the web tools app I see thrown around to find the friend emails?

There’s no call for that. If you’ve got 5 friends named “Joe [lastname]” and Plex automatically changed their usernames to “jo1234” and “jo2345,” etc., you’ve got no way within the UI to figure out who’s who. It’s a legitimate issue.

you’ve completely missed my point.

I’ve not lost any of my friend emails no matter how criptic Plex has decided to name them.

The fact remains, snarky comments like that aren’t helpful.

Blockquote
You can easily share one or more of your libraries with family or friends. The ability to share is intended for use with family and close, personal friends.

You don’t forget emails for “family and close, personal friends”

Argue “snakiness” however you want, but this is why they don’t care.

As I indicated previously – There is a different to not kowing personal email addresses when they are close work friends. Friends I let use my server during covid, etc. at work we are all Firstname@ — but personal emails are anything but standardized. PuppyLove and Amanda have no correlation. I had no need for personal email addresses, and when I did the invites, I simply pasted their personal email from a company ‘teams’ message to a plex invite.

That is my scenario – and completely legit for me to be able to expect to know who my users are after inviting them.

Just wow!

I guess you just prove that for anyone with something like dementia there’s always an arrogant douche whose life (and memory) is perfect.
