Replace movie in different format = Not playable = Unavailable

Hi!

I have a problem, if I add a movie to the library, for example "Home (2015).mp4" and realises that the quality is bad and want to replace it with a new file I sometimes get this anoying problem.

I remove the movie from my server, I start a scan of the library, analyze, optimize, clean bundles, empty trash etc. I add a new file in AVI-format, "Home (2015).avi", I start a scan of the library, it detects the new file. Now the problem starts, it shows as available I click play but it is not playable and shows as unavailable all of a sudden. I remove it, rescan library, analyze, optimize, clean bundles, empty trash etc. I add the movie again and the same trouble again, not playable and shows as missing.

I found a solution though, if I look at the info about the movie in Plex Library it shows the correct path to "Home (2015).avi" on my server but in the info it says that it have MP4 container as the first source I had. So I used Handbrake to convert it to a new MP4 and added it to the library again and now it is playable.

Does anybody now how to get around this problem in an easier way?

add the different format file first,

update library, so plex recognises it

you should get a little '2' on the movie poster

then erase the old file

update library again, empty trash

this has the added benefit of keeping watched progress for all users and not showing up as 'newly added'

Hi!

I have tried tried that, but with the same random outcome, sometimes it works and sometimes not.

I think it works if the old file and new file has the same container, but if the old file is for example MP4 ande the new is AVI I get this problem. Do the library save information even if I delete a file, if it does maybe thats the problem?

it should always work if you stick to the exact order of actions like I wrote them. And let your server enough time to finish each before advancing to the next.

Hmm, oki, I will try that exakt order again next time, but I usually do like you described, but sometimes I get the unavailable problem.

I will post again if it does not work with files in different format.

Thanks for your quick replies OttoKerner!

I’m seeing the same issue. I’ve completely removed files and it’s still showing them there just “unavailable”. Emptied trash, analyzed, force refreshed, waited days. Nothing. Really annoying little bug.

I just replaced a bunch of old SD with 1080’s and I have the same issue. I deleted, rescaned, emptied trash and the new ones are not recognised at all. I can play them but metadata and covers are not downloading even when I match!

I have the same issue with the Windows version of Plex.

I have this problem now too. If I download an episode of a series and later replace this file with another release the old release will still be listed (as “Unavailable”, though). I’ve done the ringading-procedure with ‘Empty Trash’ and ‘Update Library’ of course. The old files are still listed there.

Oke listing up.
You go in plex web to setting and make sure allow media removal is on. Then you just go to the movie that shows unavailable just click on the unavailable and there you see you can delete the info of the old file.
