Replace wmc with plex and fire tv?

Hello, I’m trying to figure out exactly what I need to use the new dvr features with a fire tv. I’m using wmc on windows 7 now and just have the hdmi cable running into my tv. My tuner is an hdhomerun connect. What do I need? Just a fire tv running the plex dvr beta and I can dvr ro a network drive? Or do I need to have plex media server running on my windows machine, and a fire tv to watch and record? Thanks.

So I need a server and a fire tv?

You need a Plex server and a Plex pass as it is a Plex Pass only feature.
I am not sure exactly what you need because I do not use that feature but since you seem to have joined today and not have read the basics I linked to them for you to read up on.

Yes I read them. They are not clear on if the fire tv acts as a plex server or if I need a separate server on top of that.

No the FireTv is definitely not a Plex server. Some more reading on Plex servers:

Ok thanks that’s what I was looking for. I’ll just wipe my windows 7 box and install linux and then the plex linux server. Thanks much.

Plex on Fire TV is mostly broken, has been for some time and there is no light at the end of the tunnel. They’re not even working on completing the tunnel. Well, OK they haven’t even started the tunnel apart from marking a big X on the mountain where they want to tunnel to go. Don’t take my word for it - Horror stories abound here:

It’s difficult to separate the SHIELD horror stories from the Fire TV horror stories, but do the best you can.

As far as bulletproof devices with Plex there is only one - Roku 3. All those new Rokus are just Roku 4s (another horror story of it’s own) dressed up in sheep’s clothing. A savvy customer wouldn’t touch anything, but a Roku 3 now and for the foreseeable future.

Plex DVR is in Beta. Any rumors you heard about it being ready for Prime Time are just that - rumors. In order to even join the Beta-Squad-DVR-Team you are locked in to a previous server version that you have to install specially. You can’t go forward or backward.

I have been using WMC for over a decade myself. Some time in that decade I added MCEBuddy to automate the Plex/WMC ‘blending’ and have no problems or regrets. It is working beautifully and has been since the day I installed it (MCEBuddy).

Plex has that Plex-DVR-Beta group tied to a chair at Plex HQ under top-secret conditions. No news gets in, or out. Sure, it’s easy to sign up for a Plex Pass to join the beta-testers, but what happens after that is a complete mystery. If anything good was happening behind those hallowed walls we’d know about it, but so far the sound of crickets is the only noise being made.

If I were you I’d stand pat (like I’m doing) until those horrific lab experiements at Plex HQ either create a monster the townspeople will have to go up there to kill, or an Angel from the Heavens, but I only see storm clouds ahead. Here’s something to keep you occupied:

Here’s a guide to make it all happen in the Plexiverse:

I’m happy to answer any questions.
