Let’s say I have the first episode from the tv show LOST and a lot of custom metadata for it already in place. What happens if I replace this episode file for another one with better quality, but keeping it in the same folder structure and with the same name of it’s predecessor? Will it still be able to pull the custom metadata?
If you’re that strongly into custom metadata you might also look into how to make it persistent.
Your current customizations might be lost if you need to re-build your server for some reason. You should be good for any custom posters/backdrops as those can be stored as local media assets along your media files.
If you customize texts/descriptions etc. you might want to embed those information into your media files (e.g. using mp4/m4v containers).
Correct me if I’m wrong please, but including the metadata would mean to have a less flexible file, wouldn’t it? I mean, in case I find a file with better quality, I would have to have all the work again, wouldn’t I?
If there is a heavy structural change, as you mentioned, would a good backup of Plex data sufficient to provide the metadata for any file that is actually made for them?
