So tired of losing custom sorts, posters, metadata!

OS: Linux Mint 20.1
Server Version#: 1.24.5.5173

I have been a Plex/Plex Pass user for many many years. I have spent countless hours/days/weeks during that time manually building/rebuilding/rebuilding/rebuilding… my libraries with custom metadata, sort orders, posters, playlists, etc. Especially when I do a fresh install and copy over my backed up data. It rarely ever remembers these things.

Once again after this last update I seem to have lost all that data. PLUS I am having the same issues as many others with PLEX unable to load metadata/posters (manually or automatically) for many shows/movies. I am noticing this morning that some of the metadata is starting to populate after about a week of nothing.

Anyway, after this last update I went in once again and started to re-input the custom sorts for my libraries. I started with my Star Treks and Star Wars collections. I got them all in the order I want. A few days have gone by and now I noticed AGAIN that the sorts are GONE. I made sure that when I did the sorts that the lock was on for the sort name. I have not made any changes to the server other than scan library and refresh some metadata. It was my understanding that a locked field will survive a scan/metadata refresh/etc? I have made sure that the “Use local assets” and “Prefer local metadata” are selected in the advanced settings for the TV Show and Movie libraries.

This is getting really old. The time I have wasted continually having to redo these things is ridiculous. It seems every update breaks things. Its one thing if a certain feature gets broken for a short term but when all your manually input customization’s get deleted over and over again, that is not acceptable. Especially for a service that we pay for. It would be great if Plex would find a better way of saving/keeping our custom data to be sure that no matter what that data is always available. Maybe have it saved to our Plex Pass account in the cloud?

Has anyone else had the same issues? If so, have you found a way around it?

So far the procedure from the Move an Install to Another System | Plex Support support article has worked fine for me (incl. all manual additions / collections / …).

If you have some “loose drives” (e.g. drives which might be disconnected or taking too long to spin up) in combination with automatic / periodic library updates and automatically emptying the library trash after scans… disabling Settings > [Server Name] > Library > Empty trash automatically after every scan might help avoid losing those manual edits.

It’s not the answer you want, but I have “solved” all such problems by limiting my use of Plex metadata features. I update file names and tags to improve automatic metadata lookup, because those changes are durable and 100% under my control.

I don’t rate music tracks, because those ratings can’t be saved into the files. I only make collections, playlists, etc. that I am OK with losing, so… not many.

I miss not using these features but I’d feel a lot worse if I put in a lot of work and lost it, which is a story I see here all the time.

It would be nice if Plex had some way to backup/restore this kind of information without the full system reinstall method that @tom80H linked.
