Replacing Movie but keeping play history

Hi there,

Is it possible to replace a movie with a new file but keep all the play history, etc?

I tried two methods so far which I read should work.

  1. I dragged the new file to the same location with the same name and told it to replace it. This worked the first time but after that, every film showed as new and all history had gone. I did try restoring it from the trash, but none of the play history came back. (Can the play history be recovered?)

  2. I added the new higher res version, and then merged it with the old version on my library. Once I had checked they were merged, I deleted the older version, Again all play history has gone and I can’t find a way to get it back.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Strange I had never issues with that.

I drop the higher quality version with a different name in the folder and eventually delete the smaller one.

Media item status in the library stays unchanged.

When you perform the merge, be sure to select the existing movie first, then select the newly added one, then do the merge. That way everything Plex knows about the old movie, including watch history, is maintained. After the merge you can delete the old movie. If needed, you can edit the movie metadata to reflect the new media (e.g., different edition, etc.).

  1. Refresh Metadata of the movie which is to be replaced
  2. then copy the new file, named slightly different, but should be still easily recognizable. Ideally, use the “foolproof” naming Movie Title (year) - {imdb-ttxxxxxxxx} where xxxxxxx is the IMDb ID number.
  3. Scan Library
  4. verify that the new file has been added as a duplicate to the existing poster
  5. remove the old file
  6. Scan Library again
  7. Empty Trash
