Requesting Definitive Answers on How to Import an iTunes Playlist into Windows PMS

Plex Media Server Logs_2018-09-20_01-33-11.zip (3.0 MB)

Done, I’ve uploaded the logs.

Yes, I guess that was PMP, the Web Client version is 3.69.1.

I’ve been bouncing around between PMP, PMS, the Web Client, and the Windows 10 modern UI (or whatever Microsoft is calling it this week) version.

Thanks for all your help with this.

BTW, I’m just moving an exact copy of my iTunes Library to another machine so that if need be, I can install PMS there as a test to see if I get different behavior.

If you should need me to any testing like that I’m certainly prepared to do so.

Ok. What is shown for the path to the xml file? You mentioned earlier that this changed at the end of creating the library. Did you try changing this back to just the path and then restart PMS?

Yes, I did change it back and then restart. So the path shown is correct and does not include the actual file name itself. In my case the path is “E:\iTunes”, without the quotes.

What is the name of your music library that you imported into?

It’s called simply “Music”.

There does seem to be some issue where your PMS doesn’t think iTunes is available. Can you restart PMS, don’t do anything, just let it sit for 3 minutes, then get me a new log. Thanks.

Here are the new logs taken about 3 minutes after a restart.

I’m sure that you must be seeing this in the logs, but I noticed that one more place where the iTunes XML Data Path is stored is in the Windows registry at this location:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server\iTunesLibraryXmlPath

That is currently set to the path to the XML file without the file name. I assume that is correct but thought I would mention it.

The logs don’t show preferences like this. Are you sure that it actually imported your playlists from iTunes when you created the library? I do see some things in your log that would indicate otherwise.

Yes, I am 100% absolutely certain of this since I had no playlists at all prior to this.

NOTE: The library may have been recreated again since then which is why you may have seen indications otherwise. I don’t know why, but I believe it was yesterday that I noticed that Plex seemed to be going through the entire music library again and refreshing all the metadata again (not just a quick scan like you would get if you choose “Scan Library Files”).

Actually, I have one more question about this: My Plex music Library is the same directory that iTunes points to. In other words, E:\iTunes is my iTunes Library directory AND my Music Library in Plex. Is this okay or should I be copying the iTunes Library to another location for Plex to use? I had assumed that this would be okay since Plex does not seem to write anything to this directory.

Finally, if you feel it would be of any use, I’m willing to delete all playlists, then delete the Music Library from Plex and then re-create it from scratch. I’ve already done this before and it did do a one time import of my playlists but left me in the current state where there is no option to re-import the playlists again even after I create new playlists in iTunes. I’m just thinking that this could give you a fresh set of logs.

Did you not use the import from iTunes option again when you recreated the library? Or did you leave that off since you already had the playlists? This could definitely be the issue. The library has to have that “import from itunes” checked at the time of creation.

If you don’t mind, please recreate your music library (or create a new one), no need to wipe what you already have. Ensure the import option is enabled. Then once the import is complete, go look for that “…” button after your playlist category. Do not restart PMS in between. If you don’t see it, please provide me the new set of logs.

One clarification:

When I said that the library may have been created again I want to make clear that this was NOT INITIATED BY ME. It was a spontaneous event. I opened plex and noticed that it was rescanning my entire Library and downloading metadata WITH NO ACTION TAKEN BY ME. As a result, I had no opportunity to set any options.

Okay, I am creating a new music library right now. This will take several hours but I will let you know the results when it is done.

My Plex Server continues to process the library, but in the meantime, I’ve installed a whole new server and have duplicated the problem there.

Here is exactly what I did:

I installed a NEW installation of Windows 10 in VMware.
I installed the latest Windows updates.

So I now have a pristine, clean installation of Windows 10 Pro v1803

I installed iTunes from the Windows store so it’s the latest version.

I add just a few albums to allow for rapid testing and I create a test Playlist.

I enable the option in iTunes to create the XML file.

I install the latest version of Plex Server that I just now downloaded from your Web Site.

I enable the iTunes Channel in Plex.

I create a new Music Library and select the option to import the playlists from iTunes.

After Plex is done the Playlist has been successfully transferred but yet again I have no option to transfer playlists again after that.

Once again, I also notice that the path to the XML file has now been altered to include the file name.

I have attached logs from this test installation.

Please also note that I have a snapshot from just prior to installing Plex so I can easily go back and repeat tests very quickly. Also, since the music Library is tiny I can create the whole library in a matter of a few minutes so any testing you want me to perform I can do easily and very quickly.

Both are same version… Version 1.13.5.5332

I’m not sure I understand what you are trying to tell me with:

Never mind, David. I understand. You are saying that the 2 installations that you have are same version.

Hi, for anyone having trouble finding the re-import from itunes action;

in plex web > playlists > click 3 dots …

see picture

imporitunes

The whole point is that there are no 3 dots in any of my installations. As noted above, I can reproduce this problem at will even with 100% clean new installations.

ok, well not sure what to tell you. /itworksforme :frowning:

if you click the playlists, are there any playlists there? try to create a playlist of anything, either a static playlist or a filter based playlist.

perhaps if the playlist section is completely empty you won’t get the three dots.

also, to confirm you have the xml path and it is in a publically accessible location (the server process must be able to access it).

try different browser and/or different computer to access web admin

my plex is on linux (readynas)

if you are able or have access to a linux box or virtual machine, you could see it works there for you, to at least see if it does or does not work on linux for you.

you may have to click ‘show advanced’ to un-hide the xml path

here is a log snippet of an inprogress re-import that is going on now on my server

another idea, perhaps before the re-import option becomes available, you must have a successful initial import ??
