Requesting more flexibility in TV show episode naming

Server Version#: 1.20.4.3517
Player Version#: n/a

It would be nice if there was a little more flexibility as far as the naming of TV show episodes go. Whilst I appreciate that some people like the SxEx format, not everybody does and not everybody names their files that way.

For instance, I have hundreds of TV shows with the format “[Show name] [series][episode] [Title]” (for instance “Steven Universe 103 Cheeseburger Backpack.mp4”) which are correctly parsed by many other media servers, but Plex seems to have real trouble with. The first number is always the series, and the last two are always the episode number (And if there are four numbers then the series number is greater than 9 and so the first two numbers are the series and the last two numbers are the episode)

In most cases it’s fine, but in others it puts every single episode into “Series 1”, and in some others it seems to randomly assign the Series and many episodes don’t show up at all.

I really would rather not have to rename my entire library just for the benefit of one single, inflexible program. Even if you don’t want to modify the regex or allow people to specify their own, how about giving us the option to select files within the media library and say “THESE are series 1”, “THESE are series 2” etc?

For what it’s worth, I did try renaming a few episodes to the SxExx format and refreshing the library, and it STILL didn’t work properly. Plex seems to especially have problems with shows that have more than nine series.

Using 101 to 999 should work fine. it does get questionable when it gets to 4 digits since it could be a 2 digit season and 2 digit episode, or a 1 digit season and 3 digit episode. Yes, there are some shows with more than 99 episodes. There is no standardization on which method is correct. i.e. 1103, is that season 1 episode 103 or season 11 episode 3? Plex has chosen to allow a 1 digit season. So if you are using 4-digits with a 2 digit season, you’ll need to switch to one of the other methods.
